What is Reflective Teaching?
- is anchored on the ability of the teacher
to guide students to reflect their own
experiences in order to arrive at new
understanding and meanings.

Self Reporting

Self Reporting allows teachers to make a

regular assessment of what they are doing in
the classroom. They can check to see to
what extent their assumption about their own
teaching are reflected in their actual teaching
practices.

Self Reporting involves completing an
inventory or check list in which the teacher
indicates which teaching practices were used
within a lesson or within a specified time
period and how often they were employed.

Writing Journals

A procedure which is becoming more widely

acknowledged as a valuable tool for
developing critical reflection is the journal or
diary.
• To provide a record of the significant
learning experiences that has taken place.

• While there are many useful insights to be

gained from diaries and self-reports, they
cannot capture the moment to moment
processes of teaching.

classroom and some aspects of a lesson
cannot be recalled.
• Many significant classroom events may
not have observed by the teacher, let alone
remembered.

Guidelines for Effective Use:

1. Allocate sufficient time for reflection.

2. Schedule a short summarization.
3. The teacher serves as the facilitator
and guide in developing the skill.
4. Encourage the students to recount
their experiences to others.

5. Attend to feelings especially the

positive and pleasant ones.
6. Evaluate the experience in the light if
the learners intent.

1. Her reflections would take form of an
evaluation of the learning activities.

planning stage in order to gain a
complete “ start-to-finish experience”.

keeping confidential and must not be
graded nor taken against the writer.
Advantages:
1. Reflective teaching helps free the
teachers from impulse and routine
behavior.
2. Reflective teaching allows the
teacher
to act in a deliberate, intentional
manner and avoid the “I don't know
what will I do today” syndrome.
Advantages:
3. Reflective teaching distinguises
teachers as educated human beings.
Disadvantages:
1. That unless given clear pointers,
reflection can be formulaic, with a
tendency for “boast statements”.
2. Some staff may not be comfortable
assigning marks to a reflective process.
