What is Google Earth Engine?

• Remote Sensing Archive with petabytes of data

in one location

• A cloud-based geospatial processing platform

for executing large-scale data analysis.
Why is it such a powerful image analysis
software?

• Public data catalog: vast amounts of publicly available data (you don’t need to
store data)
• Processing power (computation engine)
• Interactive development platforms
Data Catalog

• 200 public datasets
MODIS (250m daily)

• Landsat & Sentinel (10-30m, 14-day)

• 4000 new images every day

• Terra Bella (1m daily–weekly)

• 5 million images • Terrain &Land Cover

• Weather & Climate (NOAA NCEP, OMI,

• 5 petabytes of data ...)

• ... and many more, updating daily!

Computation Engine

• The computation engine is a just

in time distributed computation
model, a cloud-based processing
infrastructure that automatically
parallelizes analyses on many
CPUs across many computers in
Google’s data centers
• •Graphical User Interface (Explorer)
• User friendly way to begin exploring and analyzing data

Two Platforms
• •Application Program Interface (Code Editor)
• Powerful geospatial tool to create complex custom analysis
• Requires some programming knowledge
• Supports both JavaScript and Python
Explorer Platform

• A point and click platform: Audience: non-programmers

• Basic analysis functionality
• Per pixel math (~ESRI’s raster calculator),
• Neighbourhood algorithms,
• Terrain algorithms, etc.
• Save and share workspace
• Explore and export data
Code Editor

• Web based IDE for the Earth Engine API

• Access many pre-made geospatial tools
Code Editor Interface
GEE in urban Mapping
• Since the launch of Google earth engine urban mapping has
become more accurate and easy but still GEE is in its Beta testing
mode, So the full potential of GEE is still not confirmed.
• Time laps feature of GEE is the best way to understand about a city
• Time laps feature can tell you about a city growth, sprawl etc.
Urban sprawl of Dallas, Texas
• During the past century, many countries,
especially in the developing world, have been
experiencing rapid urbanization and complex
changes in patterns of land cover and land use.
Mapping urban area is quite a difficult task but
Conclusion.. with the help of GEE we can map urban areas or
at least gain some valuable information on
urban growth and expansion.
• We can also see the growth pattern of urban
area visually through time laps feature of GEE.
