how our body defends us against
disease.
Learning Outcome - Grade E-F

contact.
• Give an example of another disease.
Learning Outcome – Grade C-D

• Microbes can enter our bodies through cuts.

• Can you name two other ways?
Learning Outcome – Grade C-D

• Scabs form over cuts to stop microbes

getting into our bodies.
• Can you describe two other ways our bodies
protect us from microbes?

How do microbes make us ill?
Microbes are micro organisms that are too small to be
seen. A pathogen is a microbe that can cause diseases if
it enters the body:
They can be
breathed in They can be
through the ingested (eaten)
mouth or nose through the mouth

They can enter

through cuts or
…or other bites in the skin or
natural just by touching
openings… something

Direct contact –
e.g. touching or
hugging someone

In the air – you can
Symptoms:

- A mosquito bites an
infected person and
drinks their blood.
- If the mosquito
bites someone else –
Symptoms
they pass the
-Headache
microbes on in the
-Vomiting
blood.
-Diarrhoea
Malaria
• 300 million people are affected
• 3 million people die each year from malaria
• Disease restricted to tropical regions
where mosquito survives
Common cold
Spread by:

Direct contact – eg
touching or hugging
someone with it.
Sneezing – you release
viruses into the air.
Symptoms:
-Coughing

If an infected person goes to
the toilet, the bacteria enters
the water.
If someone else drinks the
water they will become
infected.
Symptoms:
- Vomiting
-Diarrhoea
-Muscle cramps
