PROJECT OBJECTIVE
• To reduce the work and time required to erase the blackboard so as to
ease the problems of teachers as well as students.

• The idea behind the project basically is to reduce possibility of health

hazard .

• Chalk dust or the marker ink may prove hazardous to health to both the
teacher as well as student. So to reduce such problems motorized
whiteboard dusters are one of the alternatives.

• To save time in long hour lectures.

• It makes tedious work more easy .

FEATURES OF PROJECT
• Advantages:
– Horizontal & vertical cleaning action.
– Contact between duster & board can be
adjust.
– Cleaning can be done in both directions.
– Its construction is simple and requires less
maintenance.

• Disadvantages:
– No universal size
– Requires electricity
PROJECTS PARTS
THE AUTOMATED WHITEBOARD ERASER IS
DIVIDED INTO BASIC PARTS:
linear guide
It allows duster assembly to move along its path during cleaning action & provide
mechanical support too.
• linear guide length = 1 m
• Linear guide dia = 12 mm
linear bearing
A linear-motion bearing or linear slide is a bearing designed to provide
free motion in one direction. There are many different types of linear
motion bearings.
• Internal diameter = 12mm
• Pillow block bearing
A pillow block, also known as a plummer block or bearing housing, is
a pedestal used to provide support for a rotating shaft with the help of
compatible bearings & various accessories.
• INTERNAL DIAMETER – 10MM
BALL SCREW
A ball screw is a mechanical linear actuator that translates rotational motion to
linear motion with little friction. A threaded shaft provides a helical raceway for
ball bearings which act as a precision screw.
• material = stainless steel
• length = 1m
• diameter = 12 mm

BALL SCREW NUT

The circulating balls travel inside the screw and nut thread.
• diameter = 12 mm
material = stainless steel
DC MOTOR
• A DC motor is any of a class
of electrical machines that
converts direct current
electrical power into
mechanical power. The most
common types rely on the
forces produced by magnetic
fields.

• Rpm = 1000
• volt = 12v
THREE WAY TOGGLE SWITCH

• We using 3 way
toggle switch to get
forward and backward
motion
• Specifications = 2A -
250V
END SUPPORTS
• End supports support
the linear guide rail
and also stop the
linear bearing
• Material = stainless
steel
• Internal diameter
(Bore) = 12mm
JAW COUPLING
• A jaw coupling is a
type of general
purpose power
transmission coupling
that also can be used
in motion control
applications.
DUSTER ARRANGEMENT
• The cotton wick is
attached with two
aluiminum strips
which attached
together through
screw nut and linear
bearing .
• We can adjust the
pressure of our duster
as per our wish

Calculations
 Dimensions of white board
Height = 60 cm
Width = 90 cm
Border on each side = 2 cm

 Dimensions of Duster/Eraser
Height of Duster = 56 cm
Width of Duster = 4 cm

 Area of duster/eraser touching the whiteboard (a)

a = 56 cm * 4 cm = 224 sq. Centimetres = 0.0224 sq. Metres
 Selection of Motor

Let us assume minimum pressure (p) required to clean the

board = 1200 Pa

Normal Reaction = p * a = 1200 * 0.0224 = 26.88 N

Let µ = coefficient of friction (between the duster and

whiteboard surface) = 0.5

Therefore, force required to pull the slider is given as:

F = µ * Normal Reaction = 0.5 * 26.88 = 13.44 N

Erase cycle of duster is 10 sec

FABRICATION OF AUTOMATED
WHITEBOARD ERASER
Stage 1: firstly we created cad design on solid works

Stage 2: secondly we did market survey of each and

every component and find the best alternative of our
project to make it economic as much as possible.

Stage 3: All parts or components were categorized

according to their functions and sequences.

• Here some parts were identified as standard

components and the other parts could be fabricated on
the lab.
Stage 4: When all parts were ready, assembly process
was done by referring the assembly drawing.

Stage 5: The testing process on the overall system was

done to ensure whether the system properly functioning or
not.
WORKING MECHANISM
The whiteboard will be attached on an oversized wooden
board. A customized duster of appropriate length will slide
in a specific path.
Path for duster will be follow by guide rails. The movement
of duster will be achieved by ball screw driven by dc
motor. Toggle switch will help in controlling the direction of
cleaning.
Result & conclusion

• Automatic blackboard erasing mechanisms have been

examined.

• It reduces the problem of health issues and time

limitations in the learning halls.

• It reduce manual hardwork of erasing white board

• It make class advance or smart

Future scope

• In these project , there is great scope to modify

it in different ways like

1. For better finishing we can adopt a spray of water when ever

required.
2. By using wireless remote we can reduce effort and it can be more
convenient
3. This Project can be further modified into a gesture controlled eraser
by using camera and DSP processors so as to identify the position
or changing location of the users hand and make the duster do so
that more better result can be obtained.
