Rain Shelter Inovation with

UV Natural Mulch

Background

Within one year time span, chili cultivation will encounter a fluctuating
selling price. The highest price fluctuations are in October, November,
December, and January.

The high prices in those months can’t be separated from the various
problems faced by farmers, from the beginning of the cultivation until
entering harvest period.
Common problems that farmer ussualy face :

• Not enough water sources in the beginning of planting

cultivation period
• Large number of Plant-disturbing organisms
• Increase the potential of plant diseases caused by
viruses that are spread by pests
• The outbreak of disease caused by Antraknosa
Mushroom (Patek), and Phytophthora when harvesting
due to coincide with the rainy season
When the problems at the beginning of planting can be resolved, chili plants will
flourish with maximum potential results that will be achieved.

The potential of this maximum result will be difficult to achieve if cultivated

without a plastic lid, because the fertile plant with a dense canopy of plants tend
to be more susceptible to fungus attacks in the rainy season.

To solve these problems requires a little touch of cultivation technology, which is

EASY, CHEAP and PRACTICAL which we call “RAIN SHELTER".
Advantages of Chili Cultivation With Rain Shelter Method :

1. Maximum yield potential (1.3 kg / plant) more easily

achieved
2. Fungicide usage savings
– Without a shelter 2 - 3 times spray / week
– With rain shelter only 1 times spray / week
3. Labor saving
– Spray man-power
– Sanitation man-power (picking and pruning fruit and
parts of plants affected by the disease)
4. Chili that is wasted due to disease (damaged) is less
5. Spray can still be done even if drizzle is down
6. It generates a sense of calm and relieves feelings of worry
during the cultivation of chili plants
Rain Shelter Construction
based on information of farmers and agricultural service in Kabupaten Purbalingga, district Tlahab

Materials Number of needs Price Total

Straps 42 kg/ha $1,25 USD $52 USD

Stapler $35 USD

Bamboo, 175 cm 6,044 stems $0,03 USD $167 USD

Bamboo, 125 cm 3,021 stems $0,015 USD $42 USD

Bamboo, 2015 cm 3,021 stems $0,035 USD $104 USD

Natural UV Mulch 490 kg $2,3 USD $1,115 USD

Plastics

Installation fee $448 USD

TOTAL $1,963 USD

Despite of lower price, the bamboo structure with 6 months application
has lower durability compare to metal structure.
But, metal structure in installation, at least need $4200 USD for early
investment.

Bamboo structure = 9 months durability

Metal structure = min. 2-3 years durability
With a spacing of plant are 60 cm x 60 cm, the population per
hectare is 22,200 plants.

Calculation :

Formula = (Land area x Land Effectiveness)/Plant Spacing

For flat land, land effectiveness is 80%
For slopy land, land effectiveness is 60%
For steepy land, land effectiveness is 40%

Population =(10,000 m2 x 80%)/(60 cm x 60 cm)

= 22,200 plant

Then, cost per plant are = $1,963 USD/22,200

= Rp 1,282 per plant
= $0,089 USD
COMPARISON OF MAINTENANCE COST

Rain shelter are installed starting from 75 days after planting until harvest time.
At the present time, the cost differences begin to emerge from the amount of
fungicides used and the labor, as well as the cost of plant sanitation.
COMPARISON OF MAINTENANCE COST

4 $42 $186 12 $84 $203

5 $45 $139 13 $42 $141

Information :
• Without a rain shelter the spray schedule is often
disrupted due to rain fall. Spray not finished, rain down
• Plant sanitation on chili cultivation without rain shelter
requires a really thorough labor
• On cultivation with rain shelter, “pathek” disease and
“rotten stems and fruits” disease aren’t spread quickly,
makes it easy to handle the disease
• Reduced crop losses due to disease and increasing
harvesting life
For several area in Indonesia, chili planting will begin in August, if chili cultivation is
held without rain shelter, during the period of harvest (3.5 month), many
contaminated fruit that must be removed because it can infect other plants.

Loss of results due to this sort of thing is enormous. Within 3.5 months of chili
cultivation harvest period :
• With rain shelter can produce 1,150 grams / stem
• Without rain shelter only produce 950 – 1,000 grams / stems

This difference occurs because the fruit is wasted due to dead plants, due to
withered, rotten fruit or exposed to “pathek” disease (antraknosa).
If we count the wasted chili fruit is approximately 150 grams / stem, with an
average price Rp 20,000 then in 1 hectare area, potensial revenue lost is
= 150 gram x 22,200 plant
= 3,330 kg
= 3,330 kg x Rp 20,000
= Rp 66,600,000
= $4,593 USD
Lost from potential income reach $4,593 USD per single hectare area, if doing
cultivation without rain shelter.
TOTAL DIFFERENCES OF SAVING AND PRODUCTION

With Rain Shelter

Type Needs Price Total
Fungiside $992 USD

Spray Labor 5 (people) 15 (spray) Rp 70,000 $362 USD

Sanitation 2 (people 115 (day) Rp 60,000 $952 USD

Without Rain Shelter
Type Needs Price Total
Fungiside $2,429 USD

Spray Labor 5 (people) 30 (spray) Rp 70,000 $724 USD

Sanitation 4 (people 115 (day) Rp 60,000 $1,960 USD

Labor
Construction $0 USD

$5,113 USD
Production Cost Difference

Difference = $5,113 - $4,269

= $844

Lost revenue potency = $4,593

Savings with the rain shelter = $4,593 + $844

= $5,437

The calculation is only 6 months chili planting period, whereas chili

cultivation with rain shelter still can exceed that time (following the
chili planting period).
Important points in usage rain shelter :
• Thrip pest, Mites, Flea Leaf ,and others will be more common
• Periodic irrigation is required even during the rainy season, can be done with drip
irrigation system
• When the chili enters the end of the first flower production, the roof needs to be
rolled in the middle to allow the plant get water from the rain, this process should be
done to reduce “thrips” and other attacks as well as to stimulate the second flower to
arise
• The use of good shelter construction is able to withstand wind exposure, it is
advisable to use a metal frame to make it stronger (metal frame construction is
stronger than bamboo frame, but the price is more expensive)
• Farmers should always monitor weather forecasts from BMKG, the solution when the
wind season comes is by rolling the plastic into the middle
