INTEGRATED SERVICE

DIGITAL NETWORK
AN OVERVIEW OF ISDN
•ISDN was developed by ITU-T in 1976.
•ISDN is a set of communication standards for digital telephone
connection and the transmission of voice and data over a digital
line.
•The goal of ISDN is to form a wide area network that provides
universal end-to-end connectivity over digital media.

Services
ISDN Services
Bearer Services:Provides means to transfer information
between users without network manipulation content of
information.
Tele-Services:Network may change or process the data
Includes telephony,teleconferencing…..
Supplementry Services:Provides additional functionality to the
bearer services and teleservices.
E.x. call waiting ,message handling….
Types of channels

Bearer Data Hybrid

channels channels(Delta) channels
B Channels:-
A bearer channel is defined at a rate of 64
kbps.
It is the basic user channel and can carry any
type of digital information in full-duplex mode
as long as the required transmission rate does
not exceed 64 kbps
D Channels:-
A data channels can be either 16 or 64
kbps, depending on the needs of user.
The primary function of D channel is to carry
control signalling information for the B channels.
Who is calling
Type of call
Calling what number
H Channels
Carry user information at higher bit rates 384 kb/s
or 1536 kb/s or 1920 kb/s.
Used for video,video-conferencing,high speed
data/audio etc.
Can be sub divided as per need.
Advantages of ISDN
With ISDN,voice and data are carried by B channels occupying a
bandwidth of 64 kb/s .
An ISDN connection with two B channels would provide a total
usable bandwidth of 128 kb/s.
Since ISDN is a circuit switched network, there is little or no data
loss while transmitting data.
ISDN allows multiple devices to share a single line.It is possible to
combine many different digital data sources and have the
information routed to proper destination.
