ISDN

Integrated Service Digital

Network
Introduction
Integrated service digital network(ISDN):- is a
set of communication standards for
simultaneous digital transmission of voice,
video ,data &other network services over the
traditional circuits of public switching
network.
Support both circuit switching & packet
switching
Layered protocol architecture
TYPSES OF ISDN CHANNEL
Bearer channel (B-channel):- is defined at
rate of 64kbps for data or voice.
- It used to carry digital data voice and any
other low data rate information
Delta channel (D-channel): - it carry control
signal for bearer channel.
This channel does not carry data and can be
either 16 or 64 kbps
Hybrid channel (H channel):- is provided for user
information at higher bit rates and used for high
data rate application such as video.
There are three types of H-channel depending on the
data rate

Ho with the data rate of 354 kbps

H11 with the data rate of 1536 kbps
H12 with the data rate of 1920 kbps
ISDN ACCESS INTERFACES
Basic rate interface (BRI):- 2B-channel for
transferring data which operate at 64kbps
each, D cannel operate at 16kbps used for link
management purpose and signaling.
This is known as 2B+1D
Primary rate interface (PRI):- is 23 Bearer
channel at 64kbps for data and 1D channel at
64 kbps. This known as 23+1D.
Narrow band ISDN (N-ISDN)
Broad band ISDN (B- ISDN)
Functional Groupings
Terminal Equipment 1 (TE1): ISDN terminal
Terminal Equipment 2 (TE2): Non-ISDN
terminal, e.g., POT Terminal Adapter (TA):
Allows non-ISDN devices on ISDN
Network Termination 1 (NT1): Physical layer
device. Separates user premises from phone
company. Owned by user in USA. Owned by PTT
in many countries.
Network Termination 2 (NT2): OSI layers 2-3,
e.g., PBX, LAN Network Termination 1,2 (NT12):
NT1 + NT2
ISDN Services
Six types of services
Circuit switched calls over a B or H channel
Semi-permanent connections over a B or H
channel Packet switched calls over a B or H
channel
Packet switched calls over a D channel
Frame relay calls over a B or H channel
Frame relay calls over a D channel
Advantage of ISDN
ISDN also provides more bandwidth than a traditional
56kbps dialup connection.
ISDN uses bearer channel, also called B channels as clear
data paths.
Each B channel provides 64 kbps of bandwidth.
Each ISDN B channel can make a separate serial connection
to any other site in the ISDN network.
Disadvantage of ISDN
BRI is slower than DSL and cable
More expensive than DSL and cable
Bottom line: ISDN it is current form, is no longer a
first choice technology.
