• When you have a single, countable

English noun, you must always
have an article before it.

• There are two types of articles.

1. Indefinite 'a' and ‘an’.
2. Definite 'the'.
 Indefinite articles –
a and an.
 Refer to something that is not
specifically known to the
person you are communicating
with.
 E.g.- I ate a banana for lunch.
 Used before nouns that
introduce something or
someone you have not
mentioned before.
 E.g.- I saw an elephant this
morning.
 A and an are also used when
talking about your profession .
 E.g.- I am a teacher.
 I am an engineer.
 Definite Article -
the .
 ‘The’ is used to talk about
something which is known.
 Also used when you have already
mentioned the thing you are
talking.
 The first time you speak of
something use "a or an", the next
time you repeat that object use
"the".
 E.g.-I live in a house. The house
is quite old and has four
bedrooms.
 Uses of ‘The’
1. Natural Objects.
- The earth is round.
- The sun sets in this west.
2. Names of directions.

- The sun rises in the east.

3. Rivers and Mountains.
- The Ganga is the biggest river in India.

4. News paper & Magazines.

- Times of India’ is the most popular news paper

in Delhi.
5. Continents, Islands, Oceans.
-The Asia is the biggest continent
-The Pacific is the biggest ocean.

6. Historical places.
-The Taj mahal is the sysmbol of love.

7. Public places.
-The school is the temple of goddess Saraswati.

8. Musical instruments.
-The flute is my favourite musical instrument.

9. Numbers & Figures.

-I got the first class.
10. Community & caste.
- The jain is a peace- loving person.
11. Films.
- The “Baaghban” is my favourite movie.
12. Superlative degree.
- Sonal is the most beautiful actress in bollywood.
13. Special Use.
- Jay is the Salman of Unjha.
14. Scripture
- The Geeta is the holy book of Hinduism.
15. If the noun gets repeated again & again
- Mona is a student. The student is clever.
16. High posts
- Soniya Gandhi is the president of congress party.
 Where not to use …
 Don’t use ‘the’ while talking about sports.
 For example - My son plays football.
 Never use before the names of countries except where they
indicate multiple areas or contain the words (state(s),
kingdom, republic, union).
 No article with - Italy, Mexico, Bolivia, England
 Except –the UK ,t he US
 Names of academic subjects:
 mathematics, biology, history, computer science
 Don’t use ‘the’ with God.
 I believe in God.
 Don’t use it before city, language, festival.
 Before lunch, dinner etc. never use ‘the’.
