Course Outline
Learning Outcomes:
To gain basic concepts of thermodynamics and its laws,
conservation of energy and cycle concepts.
Understanding the basic principles of heat & mass transfer,
refrigeration and air-conditioning.
To learn the application of various machine components used in
industry.
To introduce turbo-machinery (Turbines, compressors and engines
etc.)
Course Outline
Part 1-Thermodynamics:

Thermodynamics, definition and scope, the system, control volume, working substance,
heat and work, state and properties, thermodynamic process and cycle, first law of
thermodynamics, ideal gas laws, equations of state, thermodynamic temperature scale,
concept of open and closed cycles.

Energy (introduction), Forms of Energy, Energy balance, Energy Transfer by Heat, Energy
Transfer by Work, Examples and exercise problems.

The Pressure-Volume diagram, Methods of heating and Expanding Gases and Vapors,
Examples and Exercise problems. Mechanisms of heat Transfer, Examples and Exercise
problems.
Second law of thermodynamics, Heat pumps and heat engines, thermal efficiency, COP,
applications, Examples and exercise problems.

Introduction and Classification of refrigeration systems / cycles, Units, Refrigerants and its
properties. Fundamentals of air conditioning system .Heating, ventilation and Air
Conditioning (HVAC).

Part2-Rotating Machinery:

Introduction to rotating machinery. Compressor function, types and applications, Boilers,


types and applications, Steam turbines, types and applications, Introduction to internal
combustion engines: Two and four-stroke engines, SI and CI engines, Electric motors, types
and applications.

Part 3- Power Transmission Elements:

Introduction to power transmission elements. Belts drives, pulleys and their types, Gear
function, types and gear applications, Gear trains, Chains drives and sprockets, Purpose of
shafts, types and applications. Couplings, Bearings types, functions and application, Cams
and their types.
