Introduction

• Pottery in India has been in existence

since a very long time.
• It is an art which is mostly practiced in
villages, rural areas and communities

work pieces produced from this art

Existing Method
• Existing Method is an age log traditional
methods in which clay is kept at the centre of
bullock cart wheel rotated with hands.
• Broadly method can be divided in three steps
• 1. Preparation of raw material consists of
Bhusra Matti, Pili matti, Mala Matti and Ash
along with water.
• 2. Making the pot by rotating bullock cart
wheel
• 3. Drying and Hardening of the pot.
Problems faced by the Potter
• 1. Fatigue : The potter after days work get very
tired and existed due to
• A) Bad posture : An improper sitting posture
caused by the size of the wheel is very
uncomfortable making the potter tired.
• B) Method the turning the wheel : To turn a
wheel which ways 60 Kg. All days has its toll on
the potter
• C) Bad workplace layout : Layout of the work
place is improper causes him to move around
unnecessary.
• 2. Low efficiency : The reasons are Fatigue,
wastage of time and excessive effort.
• 3. Improper Finishing : Irregular wheel speed
and bad posture results in to bad quality of he
products.
• 4. Health problems : existing methods causes
pain in the joints, basically of the ankle and
knees and also causes frequent backache.
Proposed Method
• To overcome the problems cited above a pedal
operated potters wheel along with a heightened
seat was developed using –
1. Bicycle mechanism and base frame to obtain
considerable speed and force for a required
period of time
2. Wooden wheel 12” to 14” to get the required
momentum.
3. A simple mechanism consists of gear, shaft
assembly.
4. Workplace and seat Design as per ergonomics
consideration.

Further work
• To modify the machine by reducing overall size
due to space constraint.
• Replacement of Flywheel(wood to metallic) to
obtain more momentum and rpm for longer time.
• Sturdy seating arrangement and back rest to
reduce operators imbalance.
• Improvement in aesthetic look .
• Alignment of vertical shaft and braking
arrangement.
• Improvement in portability and shift to power
drive.
• Mechanism for sweep/template for mass
production.
