introduction
o Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals of India
celebrated throughout the country It is a momentous event for
Bengalis and is therefore celebrated across the world
particularly in West Bengal It is also called Navratri in northern
and other Hindi-speaking regions of India The rituals are being
followed for complete 10 days
o It involves the ritual of worship of our Goddess and the
triumph of the Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur
festival honors the indomitable female force in the form of
Shakti
BALU BAZAR PUJA PANDAL

 Durga Puja by Binod Bihari-Balu Bazar Puja Committee in Balu Bazaar is a


503-year-old affair The Mrunmayee Murti of Devi is decked up in fine silver
jewellery
 While Durga Puja here was started in the year 1514 by Saint Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu at Binod Bihari Devi Mandap, it was converted into a
community puja by local residents in 1890
 It is the only puja pandal in Cuttack where community puja is being
organised every year and it witnesses footfall of at least a lakh during all
the festive four days
 Yet another attraction of the puja here is that the deity's face has seen no
change for the past 126 years and all the idols are coloured with organic
colours and not synthetic paints. Colours are prepared from red mud,
vegetables and flowers besides a local fruit, kendu for decorating the
deity
SAHEED NAGAR PUJA PANDAL
 The magnificent Swaminarayan Temple of New Delhi has been
replicated at Saheed Nagar
 The 70-ft high and 120-ft wide has been fashioned with intricate
carvings done in thermocol, jute and ply by 40 sculptors of West
Bengal at a cost of Rs 50 lakh Yet another highlight here is the
chandi medha (silver backdrop)
 It has been decorated with pearls and semi-precious stones
The backdrop design includes 30 large peacock figurines and
flowers decorated with meenakari It is 20 ft-high and 18 ft in
width
NAYAPALLI PUJA PANDAL
 The Janaki Mandir in Janakpur of Mithila region of Nepal has come alive at
the Nayapalli Puja Pandal
 Artisans from both Odisha and West Bengal have used copper metal and
palm leaves to fashion the 80-ft high and 120-ft wide pandal
 This year, the organisers are paying respect to Devi Sita through their pandal.
A large lamp will be lit in the pandal in memory of the Uri martyrs
 Apart from cultural functions, Bhajan Samaroha, Ram Leela will be organised
during the festival. Five imposing light gates have come up near the pandal
that is located along the National Highway - 5
 The Nayapalli Puja Committee has been organising Durga Puja since 1988
and every year it sets up majestic welcome arch
CHOUDHURY BAZAR PUJA PANDAL
 The Choudhury Bazaar Puja Committee pioneered the trend of adding gold to
the tableau
 At the pandal, the deities—Devi Durga flanked by Goddesses Saraswati and
Laxmi, Lord Ganesh, Kartikeswar on both side—and Mahisasura are decorated
with heavy gold jewellery and crowns
 The Goddess wears a beautiful golden crown which is designed with precious
stones
 After the puja was started in Choudhury Bazaar in 1956, the organisers decided
to carve the backdrop of the idol in ornate silver filigree work. Around 250 kg of
pure silver was used to prepare the backdrop with motifs of peacock. In 2002,
the committee decided to create gold ornaments for the deities to mark its
golden jubilee celebration and a golden crown of 7.6 kg was prepared for the
deit
 Five of the 30 silver peacocks in the backdrop have been replaced with gold
CHANDNI CHOWK PUJA PANDAL
 the Chandni Chowk Puja Pandal located close to the
Orissa High Court
 The giant silver filigree backdrop here is one of the
most intricately carved ones in the entire of Cuttack
Prepared with at least 5 quintals of silver the 30-ft-high
backdrop is designed with motifs of 70 elephants 30
peacocks
 I on the crest there is a filigree idol of Lord Shiva
performing &lsquo Tandav Nritya&rsquo (dance of
destruction)
