FOSSILS

By: Carrie Clausel

WHAT ARE FOSSILS?
• Fossils are preserved remains from a past geological age. They can include
any of the following: shells, bones, stone imprints, and exoskeletons.
• Fossils are formed in a very similar way to each other. There are certain things
that need to happen in order for fossils to form. It needs to be buried fairly
quickly so there is no damage to the organism. Soft organisms tend to rot
away quickly and don’t usually fossilize.
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM
FOSSILS?
• Fossils give scientists ideas about how plants and animals lived in the past.
• Fossils also teach scientists about plants and animals that are extinct today,
but used to roam Earth.
• Scientist can learn about where the organism lived, what it ate, and even
how the organism died.
• Scientists are able to look at fossils and learn about the evolution of a certain
plant or animal.
