TYPES OF

FORCES
What is force?
A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the
object's interaction with another object. Whenever there
is an interaction between two objects, there is a force
upon each of the objects. When the interaction ceases, the
two objects no longer experience the force.
WHAT CAN A FORCE DO?
A force can:
• Move a stationary object
• Stop a moving object
• Slow down a moving object
• Make a moving object move faster
• Change the direction of a moving object
• Change the shape and size of an object
Types of Forces
✹Muscular Force
✹Gravitational Force
✹Frictional Force
✹Elastic Force
✹Mechanical Force
✹Buoyant Force
Muscular Force
The force exerted by the human
body muscles is called muscular
force.
Examples:
◾ Lifting objects
◾ Doing exercise
◾ Pushing
◾ Pulling
Gravitational Force
The force exerted by a celestial body is
called Gravitational Force
Examples:
The force that
❧ causes a rock to roll down hill.
❧ cause an apple to fall downward from an apple
tree.
❧ keeps you walking on Earth instead of floating
away into space.
❧ causes the moon to revolve around the Earth.
Frictional Force
Friction is the force that
opposes the motion of an
object.
Examples
✱ Walking on floor surface
✱ Rubbing of hands
✱ Pushing a object
✱ Lighting a matchstick
Elastic Force
When an elastic material is deformed due to an external
force, it experiences internal forces that oppose the
deformation and restore it to its original state.
Examples
✱ Bungee jumping
✱ Springs
✱ Bow & Arrow
✱ Rubber Band
Mechanical Force
A force used by a simple machine is
called a mechanical force.
Examples:
❧ Scissors use mechanical force to cut
objects
❧ a pulley use mechanical force to
lift objects
Buoyant Force
The upward push of water on a
floating object is called Buoyant
Force.
Examples:
✹ When you enter in a swimming pool
✹ Floating log
✹ Moving ship or boat
✹ Floating Iceberg
