EQ: How is heat transferred?
EQ: How is heat
transferred?
• Heattransfer - the movement of energy
from a warmer object to a cooler
object.
• Energy
is transferred from the warmer
lemonade to the cold ice through heat.
Different materials
require different
heat
amounts of
energy to change
temperature. ice
Heat Transfer
• There are three types of heat transfer
– Radiation
– Conduction
– Convection

EQ: How is heat

transferred?
Radiation
• Transfer of energy
through empty space
• No direct contact
between a heat
source and an object

EQ: How is heat transferred?

Conduction
• Heat transfer by direct contact of
particles of matter
• Heating a spoon in a pot of soup
– Particles near the bottom of the spoon
heat faster as they are heated, so they
bump into other particles and heat them
too.
– Gradually the entire spoon heats up
– When you touch the spoon, conduction
transfers heat to your hand

EQ: How is heat transferred?

EQ: How is
Convection heat
transferred?
• Heat transfer involving
the movement of
liquids and gasses

• Caused by difference
in temperature and
density within a fluid
– Density – a measure of
how much mass is in a
substance
Convection – What happens?
• Liquid or gas is heated and the particles
move faster
• As they move faster, particles spread apart
and take up more space and density
decreases

EQ: How is
heat
transferred?
Convection
• As the fluid cools, particles move slower
and settle closer together, increasing
density, and sinking

EQ: How is heat

transferred?
Convection Currents
• Flow that transfers heat within a fluid
• Heating and cooling of the fluid, changes
in the fluid’s density, and the force of
gravity combine to set convection currents
in motion
