• An utterance that a speaker
makes to achieve an intended
effect.
SPEECH ACT THEORY
• According to J.L. Austin (1962),
a philosopher of language
and developer of speech,
there are three types of
speech act in every utterance,
given the right context.

• It is the actual act of uttering.
• It is also the act of making a
meaningful utterance, a
stretch of spoken language
that is preceded by silence or
a change of speaker.

thoughts, feelings of other
people.
• The statement has an effect to
the listener.
