Definition
HERITAGE /'herɪtɪdʒ/
Heritage is the full range of our inherited traditions, monuments, objects, and culture. National Heritage
Areas (NHAs) are places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive,
nationally important landscape.
TOURISM /'tʊərɪzəm/
Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual
environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business, and other purposes.
WHAT IS HERITAGE TOURISM?

Heritage tourism is traveling to experience the places, artifacts and activities that authentically represent
the stories and people of the past and present. It includes cultural, historic, and natural resources.

Characteristics
• Represent a masterpiece of human creative genius;
• Exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the
world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape
design;
• Having a unique cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared;
• Outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape
which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history;
• Be an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land-use, or sea-use which is
representative of a culture (or cultures), or human interaction with the environment especially when
it has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change;
