Definition

 Operating Room attire is


a part of aseptic
environmental control in
the operating room.
 It ensures protective
barrier for the patient’s
undergoing surgery as
well as for the personnel
during the surgical
procedures
Purpose

 The purpose of the OR attire is to provide protection


from exposure to infection to the patient and also to
the surgical team members
Clean Attire

 It consist of the following:


 One piece half sleeve clean cotton
gown for the female staff
 Two piece clean cotton pajamas and
half sleeve, collarless, buttonless shirt for
the male staff
 A clean cotton head cover or cap
 A pair of clean OR sandals or shoes
Timing to use of Clean Attire

 When a personnel arrives or enters the OR, he or she has to


change into clean attire
 The change of dress and shoes is done in the changing room
situated at the entrance of the OR
Characteristics of Clean Attire

 The OR dress is simple, half sleeve, collarless, ankle length, cotton gown for
the female personnel
 The OR dress consist of a clean pair of cotton pajamas waistline draw
strings are to be tucked inside the pajama to avoid their touching the
sterile area for the male staff
 After changing the dress, one has to put on the head cover or cap
 The head cover or cap is to be put on before the scrub suit or sterile gown
by hair or dandruff
 OR shoes should be without back strap and made up of soft leather; must
be well fitted and comfortable
Sterile Attire
 Sterile Attire consist of the following
a.) Sterile Face Mask

 The scrub personnel have to wear sterile


facemask which should cover both the nose
and the mouth
 The face mask is worn to minimize the airborne
infection
 The face mask is to be worn before entering
the restricted area to filter droplets containing
microorganism expelled from the nasopharynx
and the mouth of the surgical team members
while breathing, talking, sneezing, and
coughing

 One should avoid frequently handling and touching of the mask


 Once the use of the mask is over, it should not be lowered to hang
loosely around the neck or should not be put into the pocket for
reuse and should be discarded into specific container
 The face mask should be changed between the operations when
they become soiled or damp
 Talking and laughing should be kept to minimize while wearing a
face mask
b.)Sterile Gown

 A full sleeve, full length collarless,


buttonless gown having a round
neck, front closed and a back
opened with strings at the back
which are to be tied by an
assistant after the gown has
been worn
c.)Sterile Pair of Gloves

 After the scrub


gown is worn, a
sterile pair of
gloves is to be
worn and the cuffs
of the gown
sleeves are to be
tucked inside the
gloved cuffs
 The attire should be freshly laundered and cleaned. It should be
washed dried and ironed preferably in the hospital laundry
 The OR attire is to be worn within the OR only
 The OR attire is not to be carried Done because there is risk of
contamination to household articles and to the family members
