CORE VALUES ARE THOSE THAT WILL…
 Govern personal relationships
 Clarify who we are
 Articulate what we stand for
 Help explain why we do things the way we do
 Guide us on how to show example
 Guide us in making decisions
At the core of all relationships is the most
important relationship of all: the relationship
to SELF.

The more we know ourselves, give to ourselves and

love ourselves, the more we can truly know and
connect to others. If we can not give love, attention
and caring to ourselves, how can we truly share
these with others?

WHAT IS A CHARACTER?

CHARACTER
Is More than
Talk

Your character determines who you are.

Who you are determines what you see.

What you see determines what you do.

CHARACTER

Character refers to the tendency to act in ways

that are consistent with what one
understands to be morally right. A person of
good character is someone who attends to
the moral implications of actions and acts in
accordance with what is moral in all but the
most extreme of circumstances.
 Personal dignity
 Self worth

 Good reputation

 And in all, it is the CHARACTER

RESPECT
What Is Respect?
 Respect is an attitude of caring about people
and treating them with dignity.
 Respect is valuing ourselves and others.

 We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy.

 When we are respectful we treat others as we want to be
treated.
 Respect includes honoring the rules of our family or
school, which make life more orderly and peaceful.
 It is knowing that every man, woman and child deserves
respect, including you.
Why Practice It?
 Without respect for rules, we would have confusion.
 People would treat each other rudely and violate
each other’s privacy and other rights.
 Respect help people to feel valued.
Self-respect is making sure no one hurts you or abuses
you, even an elder.
 When you respect yourself, others respect you, too.
How Do You Practice It?
 Think about how you would like others to treat
you and treat them with the same dignity.
 How would you like others to speak to you, treat your
belongings, and your right to privacy?
 If you want to use someone else’s things, ask, and
then take good care of them.
 Express even your strongest feeling in a peaceful
way.
 Treat yourself as you feel others deserve to be treated.
 You deserve it too.
QUOTABLE QUOTES

 Take care of your reputation. It’s your most valuable

asset.” Anonymous

 “There is a longing among all people to have a sense

of purpose and worth. To satisfy that common longing in
all of us we must respect each other.” Chief Dan George

 “Respect is treating your body with the same care you

would give any other valuable and irreplaceable object.”
Cherie Carter Scott
 “Your body is your vehicle for life. As long as you are
here, live in it. Love, honor, respect, and cherish it, treat
it well and it will serve you in kind.” Suzy Prudden

 No one can make you feel inferior without your

consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt

 When I respect others, others respect me, and I like

that.” 6th Grader in California
COMMITMENT
Commitment separates doers
from Dreamers.
People do not follow uncommitted
people.
Commitment can be displayed in
a full range of matters to include:
- the work hours you
choose to maintain.
 Dieter Pauwels defined commitment as a
choice to live life in harmony with ones
personal values based on what he believes
and not what others want him to believe.

"Choose to live your life in harmony

with your personal values.
Make choices based on what you believe,
not what others want you to believe.”
1. What is commitment? To each
person it means something
different.

- to the boxer, it’s

getting off the mat
one time more than
you’ve been
knocked down.

- to the marathoner, it’s

running another ten miles
when your strength is gone.
- to the soldier, it’s going over
the hill, not knowing what’s
waiting on the other side.

- to the missionary, it’s

saying good-bye to your
own comfort to make life
better for others.
- to the leader, it’s all that and
more because everyone you
lead is depending on you.
WHAT IS THE TRUE NATURE
OF COMMITMENT? CONSIDER
THESE 3 OBSERVATIONS:

1) Commitment starts in the

heart.

 Some people want everything to be

perfect before they’re willing to commit
themselves. But commitment always
precedes achievement.
2. Commitment is tested by action.

 It’s one thing to talk about commitment. It’s

another to do something about it.

 The only real measure of commitment is action.

“Nothing is easier than saying words. Nothing is harder than

living them day after day.” (Gordon)
3) Commitment opens the door to
achievement.

 As a individual, you will face plenty of obstacles and

opposition.

 And there will be times when commitment is the

only thing that carries you forward.
“Commitment is the enemy of
resistance, for it is the serious
promise to press on, to get up, no
matter how many times you are
knocked down.”

Ifyou want to get anywhere

worthwhile, you must be committed.
One of the
secrets of being
happy is doing
things for other
people.
ESSENCE OF HUMAN CHARACTER,
RESPECT AND COMMITMENT

 Increase moral and personal dignity

 Builds trust and cooperation

 Strengthen one’s values and judgment

 Improves interpersonal relationships

QUESTION:

What is the one thing that is yours, the one

thing you would still have even if you lost
everything?
THOUGHTS TO PONDER….
The art of being yourself at your best is the art of unfolding your
personality into the person you want to be. . . . Be gentle with
yourself, learn to love yourself, to forgive yourself, for only as we
have the right attitude toward ourselves can we have the right
attitude toward others.
-Wilfred Peterson

Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man

of value.
-Albert Einstein
