• Learn how to do lab (You will get a review at lab)

• Make sure you can get 100 on the quiz
• Remind you to take the quiz
SIEVE ANALYSIS

• Figure out the distribution of sizes of aggregate

• Two kinds of aggregate
• Fine (sand)
• Coarse (gravel)
OVERALL CONCEPT

• Get aggregate
• Put it through a series of sieves
• Weigh how much is on each sieve
• Later: Perform calculations (percentages, how much has passed, running totals…)
RULES, RULES, RULES

• Make sure it is done the same as possible every time

• Are you a stickler for details?
• ASTM – Free at UW, otherwise $$$$
• I summarize them for you
• If you get a job doing this, you will need to know ASTM inside-out
GET THE SAMPLE

• FA
• Split twice
• Start with 2000 g
• End up with 500 g
• CA
• Quarter on floor
• Start with 4000 g
• End up with 1000 g
• But…
STACK THE SIEVES

• Make sure they are clean

• Weigh them (unless you trust the previous group)
• Big on top, small on bottom, pan at very bottom
• Sizes are on handout
SHAKE THE SIEVES

• For 5 minutes
• Vary speed
WEIGH THE SIEVES

• CAREFULLY pry them apart (don’t spill)

• Weigh the sieves
• Subtract the weight of the empty sieve
• WRITE IT DOWN
POST-PROCESS

• There are calculations to make
