Solitary Inflorescence
Solitary flowers are borne singly Small flowers are borne
and separate from one another. together in dense clusters.
Inflorescence
A group or cluster of flowers arranged on a stem that is
composed of a main branch or a complicated arrangement
of branches.

• The arrangement of the flowers on a plant.

• The process of flowering.
Pedicel Flower
d

The stalk of the individual flowers.

Flower
These rest at the top of the pedicle
or the main stalk.

Peduncle
It is the main supporting stalk of the
inflorescence
Bract
Any leaf associated with an
inflorescence.

These are small green petal-like

structures that are found near
the peduncle.
Types of Inflorescence
Spike Raceme Corymb Umbel

Composite
Panicle Cyme
Head
Raceme
This type of inflorescence is indeterminate.
Individual flowers have pedicels. Pedicels can vary
in length from species to species. The lower flowers
open first.

Spike
This type of inflorescence is indeterminate. Individual
flowers are sessile (without pedicels). The lower
flowers form first.
Snapdragon Spearmint
RACEME SPIKE
Corymb
Somewhat similar to the umbel. This type of inflorescence
is indeterminate. The Individual flower pedicels are
attached to the peduncle at different points. Often flat-
topped. The outer flowers open first.

Umbel
This type of inflorescence is indeterminate. Individual
flower pedicels all originate from the same spot on
the peduncle. The outer flowers open first.
Yarrow Onion
CORYMB UMBEL
Composite Head
A highly advanced inflorescence that consists of
separate ray and disk flowers. The bracts may be
green, but can also be colored (Strawflower).

Panicle
A highly branched inflorescence consisting of many,
repeating units. Panicles can be made of many
spikes, racemes, corymbs, or umbels. This type of
inflorescence is indeterminate.
Sunflower Redhorse Chestnut
COMPOSITE HEAD PANICLE
Cyme
In real life, cymes tend to be flat or convex shaped. The inner
flowers open first. This type of inflorescence is determinate.
