FETHIJA

MOSQUE
• The Fethija mosque is located in Bihac, and was
originally built as the church of St. Anthony of Padua
in 1266.
• This is the only mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina
that has a Gothic style.
• 1592. The Ottoman empire was conquered by Bihac
and church of St. Antuna turned into a mosque.
• That's why he got the name Fethia (win)
Bihac is the last Bosnian city that was conquered by the Ottomans
Bihac was conquered after 100 years of conquering the first cities in BiH
OLD TOWN OSTROŽAC

FROM THIS PLACE THE OTTOMANS OCCUPIED

BIHAC
• This is the only Ottoman mosque in this area
• This is because this area was always the border of
the Ottoman Empire and the Ottomans did not build
anything new in the area.

• Many changes in Fethia have been made in the

interior, while the outer part has only changed the
minaret which was built instead of the bell tower.
• The bell tower was used as a minaret until 1863 and
the minaret was built on the base of this bell tower
THE SOUTH SIDE
OF THE CHURCH
OF SV. ANTUN
• If we compare these two images, we
see that the Ottomans completely
preserved the appearance of the
church that they converted into the
mosque.
• These are the only two windows on
this mosque so the interior is very
dark
• This is the only mosque in BiH with
this style of window
• And it is the only mosque in which
the minaret is right next to the door
• Usually the minaret is either on the
right or on the left side of the
mosque
In this picture you can see the In this picture you can see the
Arabic inscription above the door Gothic window above the door
• This is the interior of the
mosque
• You can notice that the
interior of the mosque is
very spacious and tall
• What is very interesting is the fact
that the prayer room had to turn to
the right

• This is because the church is not

facing the direction that the Muslims
are turning

• If you look at this picture better, you

will see that space is facing right
against the walls
• Since the church has no
special space for women, the
Ottomans had to build this
space.
• This space is completely
constructed of a wooden
structure so as not to disrupt
the original appearance of
the church
In addition to the
mosque contained
nine tombstones
dating from the 1519th
to 1965th
These plates were
transferred to the
Earth Museum in
Sarajevo.
• Based on Fethiye, many
mosques were built in
this area.
• Today, all mosques,
modeled on Fethija, are
spacious and high so
that Fethija one of the
smallest mosque in this
area.
• What is very related to
the church or Fethija
mosque is the Clock
tower in Bihac
• Fethija Mosque and
Clock Tower are
symbols of the city of
Bihac
• Many years ago,
Catholics in Bihac tried
to return Feth to the
church but never
succeeded.
• However, they are
grateful to the Muslims
who have managed to
preserve Fethia after
many wars that occurred
in that area
