influences their views, their values, their humor,
their hopes, their loyalties and their worries and
fears.
Culture its also important to remember how much
we have in common. At the same time, we can’t
pretend our cultures and differences and
pretend they don’t exist, wishing we could all be
alike and we can’t pretend that discrimination
doesn’t exist.
WHY IS UNDERSTANDING CULTURE
IMPORTANT IF WE ARE COMMUNITY
BUILDERS?
 In order to build communities that are powerful enough to attain
significant change, we need large numbers of people working together.
 Each cultural groups has unique strengths and perspectives that the
larger community can benefit from.
 Understanding culture will help us overcome and prevent racial and
ethnic divisions.
 People from different cultures have to be included in decision-making
processes in order for programs or policies to be effective.
 An appreciation of cultural diversity goes
hand-in-hand with a just and equitable society.
 If we do not learn about the influences that
cultural groups have had on our mainstream
history and culture, we are all missing out on
an accurate view of our society and our
communities

and human behaviour and societies in the past and present.

many different aspects of the human experience which we
call holism. They consider the past, through archaeology, to
see how humans groups lived hundreds or thousands of years
ago and what was important to them.
Social Anthropology and Cultural Anthropology is the study of
norms and values of societies
Linguistic Anthropology studies how language affects social
life.
THE FOUR SUBFIELDS
Archaeology Archaeologist study human culture by analyzing the
objects people have made. They carefully remove from the ground
such things as pottery and tools and they map the locations of houses,
trash pits and burials in order to learn about the daily lives of people.
They also analyze human bones and teeth to gain information on a
people’s diet and disease they suffered.
Biological Anthropology biological anthropologist s seek to
understand how humans adapt to different environments, what
causes disease and early death, and how humans evolved from other
animals. To do this, they study humans (living and dead)
Cultural ASociocultural anthropologists explore how people
in different places live and understand the world
nthropology around them. They want to know what peoples
think is important and the rules they make about how they
should interact with one another. Even within one country or
society, people may disagree about how they should
speak, dress, eat, or treat others.
Linguistic Anthropology linguistic anthropologist study the
many ways people communicate across the globe. They
are interested in how language is linked to how we see the
world and how we relate to each other. This can mean
looking at how language works in all different forms and
how it changes over time.
