SUBJECT- VERB AGREEMENT
• A subject (noun or pronoun) and a verb in a
sentence must always agree with one another.
• If the subject is singular, the verb must be
singular; and if the subject is plural, the verb
must also be plural.
e.g. A boy is here.
(singular subject) (singular verb)
Some boys are here.
(plural subject) (plural verb)
SENTENCE PATTERN
IMPORTANT NOTES
• A sentence can have one or more verbs.
• Verbs must be written in a correct tense.
• Verbs must agree with the subject of a
sentence.
• Verbs can be used with auxiliary verbs.
SENTENCE PATTERN
There are three types of sentences:
1. Simple sentences (S-V), (S-V-O), (S-V-C), (S-V-E)
2. Compound sentences
3. Complex sentences
SIMPLE SENTENCES

COMPOUND SENTENCES
Definition: A compound sentence has two or more
independent clauses (complete sentences)

Two independent clauses can be connected in 3


ways:
1. Use but, or, yet, so, for, and, nor, - to join the
clauses.
2. Use link words like however, in addition
3. Use semicolon
COMPOUND SENTENCES
1. She reads many magazines, and she enjoys the hobby.
2. He eats a lot, but he does not put on weight.
3. They buy a tarantula as a pet for they love exotic
animals.
4. You may eat your meal now, or may take it away.
5. We do not shout, nor do we clap our hands.
6. It rains cats and dogs, so we cannot cycle to class.
7. She sharpens the knife many times, yet it is still blunt.
8. Ali sweeps the floor, Abu cleans the dishes, but Amin
just sleeps on the sofa.
COMPLEX SENTENCES
Definition:
A complex sentence has one complete sentence
(independent clause) and at least one
incomplete sentence (dependent clause).
Examples:
1. If he fails the test, he will be expelled from
college.
2. When I went to her house, she had already
left.
