REALITY SERIES

Arithmetic sequence
Arithmetic sequence
 An arithmetic sequence is a list of numbers typically
with a pattern where the difference between
successive terms of a sequence is always the same
number which is called the common difference.

 An example of a real life situation showing an

arithmetic sequence is the following:
Strawberry season

 This is strawberry season, so every day more and more straw berries are
ripening
 Strawberries and their number of days are directly proportional. This
means as days go by, the more their number increases.
Situation
•20 strawberries were picked the first day. Each day,
5 more strawberries are able to be picked than the
previous day.

•We can write this as an arithmetic sequence where the common

difference is 5.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3

Strawberries 20 25 30
harvested

•Find how much strawberries would be harvested after 30 days.

•But how would we know the quantity of something after a

certain date?
20,25,30,…
 To find out how many strawberries were able to be picked
after 30 days, we'll use the sum formula
Sn=n/2 (2a1+(n-1)d
• Solution:
 Sn= n/2 (2a1+(n-1) d where:
Sn= 30/2 (40+(30-1) 5 n=30
Sn= 15 (40+(29) 5 a=20
Sn= 15 (40t145) d=5
S30= 15 (185)
S30= 2775

o After 30 days, the strawberry farmers would have harvested 2775 strawberries.
Well done!
