 SPECIAL PURPOSE LATHES

• As the name implies that these type of lathe machines

used for special purpose and for production work.
• In this lathe only special operations are performed such
as Drilling , Grinding Reaming , Boring etc.. can be done.
 REAMING OPERATION

• A reamer is a type of rotary cutting tool used in metal working.

• Precision Reamers are designed to enlarge the size of the previously bored hole
by small amount with high degree of accuracy to leave smooth sides.
• The process of enlarging the hole is called Reaming.

 WHEEL LATHE MACHINE

• The Wheel Lathe Machine is made for finishing the journals and
turning the thread on the Rail road , Automobile Cars and
Locomotive wheels.
• The three types of wheel lathe are Above-floor Wheel Re-
Profiling, Wheel Boring and machining , Wheel set and Bearing
presses, Wheel set Processing etc…
 GAP BED LATHE

• Gap or extension-type lathes are similar to toolroom lathes except that the gap
lathes can be adjusted to machine larger Diameter and longer workpieces .
• The operator can increase the swing by moving the bed a distance from the
headstock , which is usually one or two feet .
• By sliding the bed away from the headstock , he gap lathe can used to turn very
long workpieces between centers.
 T-LATHE MACHINE

• The T-lathe machine is used for machining rotors for jet engines.
• The axis of lathe bed is at right angles to the axis of the headstock spindle in
the form of a T.
• These lathes are used for rotors machining and it gives high accuracy and
precision.
• This can also used for components required with good surface finish and high
dimensional accuracy.
 DUPLICATING LATHES

• The Duplicating lathe is one of the duplicating the shape of the flat or round
template on to the workpiece.

• Mechanic , hydraulic and pneumatic devices are all used to co-ordinate the
movement of the tool to reproduce accurately the shape of the template.
 AUTOMATIC LATHE

• In this type of Lathe Machine, all the work is done automatically.

• These are high speed , heavy duty , production lathes.
• In this type of Lathe once the tool is set it performs all the operations
automatically to finish the job.
• Here the change of tool and feed are automatically done and a single operator can
control 5 to 6 automatic lathes at a time.
