INTRODUCTION
A concrete pavement is a rigid pavement structure
which in general consists of three layers; subgrade,
base course and the concrete slab. A concrete
pavement distributes heavy axle loads over a large
area by beam action which means that concrete
pavements are less sensitive to the subgrade support
and do not require the thick sub-base layers like
asphalt concrete pavements.

SITE CLEARENCE AND EXCAVATION

• ORIGINAL GROUND LEVELS SHALL BE TAKEN IN BOTH LONGITUDINAL


AND TRANSVERSE DIRECTION AT SPECIFIED INTERVALS.
• MARKING SHALL BE DONE FOR EXCAVATION TO ITS LINES WIDTH AND
LENGTH.
• THE EXCAVATOR SHALL CARRY OUT THE EXCAVATION TRUE TO LINES,
CURVES, SLOPES, GRADES AND SECTIONS AS PER MARKING.
• EXCAVATED MATERIAL SHALL BE DISPOSED FROM EXCAVATED AREA BY
USING END DUMPERS.
• ROLLING SHALL BE CARRIED OUT ON EXCAVATED PORTION TILL IT
REACHES 95% COMPACTION OR AS SPECIFIED BY THE PROJECT
SPECIFICATION.
CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE
• GENERALLY, STAGE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE IS ADOPTED IN
HIGH WAY CONSTRUCTION TO IMPROVE THE PAVEMENT
STRUCTURE IN STAGES TO MATCH WITH INCREASE IN ROAD
TRAFFIC. GENERALLY THE ROAD CRUST CONSISTS OF THE
FOLLOWING LAYERS.
• EARTHWORK
• SUB-BASE
• SURFACE COURSE (DBM)
• WEARING COURSE (BC)
• CURING

• EARTH WORK CONSISTS OF


EMBANKMENT AND SUB-GRADE. IT
IS MAINLY ADOPTED FOR
BRINGING THE ROAD PROFILE TO
THE DESIRED GRADE AND
CAMBER. THICKNESS OF THE
EMBANKMENT AND SUB-GRADE
ARE DECIDED DEPENDING ON THE
CBR VALUE OF THE EXISTING SOIL
AND GEOMETRICAL DESIGN OF
THE ROAD TO BE CONSTRUCTED.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM

• DRAIN THE SURFACE WATER TO THE NEARLY CULVERTS.


• NO ORGANIZED DRAINAGE SYSTEM EXISTS ALONG THE PROJECT
ROAD STRETCH. HOW EVEN THE FINISHED ROAD IS SUFFICIENTLY
SIZED AND EARTHS DRAINS HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED TO DRAIN
THE SURFACE WATER TO THE NEARLY CULVERTS
• THE EXISTING PIPE CULVERTS IN GOOD CONDITIONS AND HAVING
INTEGRAL DIA 900 MM .
SUB-BASE(GSB)
• SUB-BASE OR GRANULAR SUB BASE IS A LAYER CONSISTING OF CRUSHED
STONE, BROKEN AGGREGATE, NATURAL SAND AND GRAVEL OR COMBINATION
THERE OF COMPACTED AT OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT TO THE DESIGNED
DEGREE OF COMPACTION. THIS LAYER WILL ACT AS A DRAINAGE LAYER.
SURFACE COURSE

• SURFACE COURSE OF
1:4:8 THICKNESS OF THESE
LAYERS WILL BE DECIDED
MAINLY BASED ON THE
TRAFFIC INTENSITY ON
THE PROPOSED ROAD.
THESE WILL ACT AS
STRENGTH COURSE.
WEARING COURSE(BC):

WEARING COURSE IS DENSE GRADED CONCRETE MIX


WHICH IS WELL COMPACTED TO FORM A HIGH
QUALITY PAVEMENT SURFACE COURSE. THICKNESS
OF THE WEARING COARSE LAYER USUALLY RANGES
FROM .
CURING
• CURING OF CONCRETE SLABS IS DONE FOR A PERIOD 7-14 DAYS TO
ENABLE CONCRETE TO SET AND ATTAIN THE DESIGN STRENGTH
CURING CAN BE DONE BY MANY METHODS, SUCH AS:
 BY WATERING AND BINDING AND WEARING WITH MOIST HESSIAN
 BY COVERING WITH A PLASTIC MEMBRANE FOR APPLYING A CURING
COMPOUND
TO PROTECT A FRESHLY LAID CONCRETE PAVEMENT FROM SUN AND WIND.

QUALITY CONTROL
• MOISTURE CONTENT SHALL BE CHECKED BEFORE COMPACTION FOR PRECEDING
THE WORK. THE SAME SHOULD BE –2 TO +1 OF OMC.
• THE COMPACTED SURFACE SHALL BE CHECKED FOR FIELD DENSITY AT THE
FREQUENCY OF 1 TEST PER 500SQ.M. 0
• THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN 97%.
• THE SURFACE SHALL BE CHECKED FOR LEVELS AT 5M/10M INTERVALS
LONGITUDINALLY AND TRANSVERSELY AND THE SAME SHALL BE WITHIN +20/-
25MM
• THE GRADATION OF THE MATERIAL SHALL BE CONTROLLED AT CRUSHER BY
MAKING NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS.
