Purpose

Insulation resistance measurements are usually performed

in order to verify that the state of dryness of the insulation
of the various windings and the core are of acceptable
values.
Insulation resistance testing may also reveal important
information about concealed damage to bushings.
Test Importance

Performing insulation-resistance tests, winding-to-winding

and winding-to-ground, will detect leakage current. With
too much leakage current in a material designed not to
carry current will cause damage to the transformer or
endangering the life of personnel.
Test Overview

It is known that three components of current may be

measured upon application of voltage to an insulation
system.
Capacitance charging current
will become zero as the apparatus becomes
fully charge
Absorption current
caused by molecular changes within the
insulation material
Leakage current
current rises and becomes stable immediately
The Test Equipment

 Vanguard IRM-5000P

voltage insulation-test

Performing a Test
1. With the tester turned on, you have the option to enter the test
record header information before performing tests. The record
header includes identifying information such as company, location,
test description, etc. Once the header information has been
entered, it will apply to all subsequent test records.

Run Test Type:

- Spot Reading
- Polarization Index
- Step Voltage
- Dielectric Discharge

3. Before performing the insulation resistance test, several test

conditions are entered first. The tester prompts the test conditions
before the test is performed.

4. It is very important that the temperature of the insulation system

be known when performing the insulation resistance test.
Insulation resistance is very sensitive to insulation temperature and
varies inversely with temperature. In some insulation systems an
increase of 10°C will cause the insulation resistance to drop
approximately in half.
