Roll No-63
What is fluid ?
A fluid is a substance that continually
deform under an applied shear stress.
OR
Fluid is substance which cannot resist any
shear force on it.
Now what is fluid statics?
 The study of incompressible fluids under statics
condition is called fluid statics.
OR
 Hydrostatics and that dealing with the compressible
statics gases is termed as statics.
OR
 It is the branch of fluid mechanics that deals with the
behavior of fluid when they are at rest.
Introduction /description
 Fluid statics and fluid dynamics form the two
constituents of fluid mechanics.
 Fluid statics deals with fluids at rest while fluid
dynamics studies fluids in motion.
 A fluid at rest has no shear stress. Consequently, any
force developed is only due to normal stresses i.e.
hydrostatics condition.
Applications
 Manometer ( pressure gauge)
The manometer is an important device for
measuring pressure differences.
 U tube manometer
 Inclined manometer
 Differential manometer
U tube manometer
 It is simplest form of manometer, it
consist of glass tube bend in U-shape
one end of which is connected to a
point at which pressure is to be
measured and other end remains
open to the atmosphere.
Inclined manometer
 Used for measuring small
differences in pressure.
 This type of manometer is more
sensitive because of inclination the
distance moved by the heavy liquid
in the right limb will be more.
Differential manometer

 Differential manometers are the device used for

measuring the difference of pressure between two
points in a pipe or in two different pipes.
 A differential manometer consist U-tube, containing
a heavy fluid, whose ends are connected to the points
whose pressure difference is to be measure.
