Preface

• At present, the development of telecommunication network meets a milestone. The trends of

broadband, IP and service integration prevail clearly. Optical access has been the target of the
telecommunication access network for a time, and now it is not just a dream. Optical access
attracts more and more attention in the industry field, and brings a lot of discussions on its
technology, market and standard.
• The optical communication has suffered a deadlock for three years. Since 2004, things get better
with the optical communication. The fiber to the home (FTTH) becomes hot for its rapid
development. For the future broadband application account, more and more countries realize
that it is urgent to break through the bottleneck of the network. So far, the fiber is found to the
best transmission medium. The fiber provides the bandwidth up to 75,000 Gbps that advances
optical access. FTTH has become one of the best methods of handling the last-mile access.
• Now, the optical communication market has the following trends:
– The cost/bit of optical transmission links keeps on decreasing.
– The networking mode gets closer and closer to the intelligent and dynamical optical networking.
– The network edge becomes a multi-service platform to transmit and integrate services.
– The core of the network develops into the transmission layer and the service layer respectively, and
the optical transmission network evolves to the service network.
– The vertical structure of the network tends to be flattened.
– The horizontal structure of the network turns to the optical access gets closer and closer to
subscribers.

ONT: Optical Network Terminal

• In a narrow sense, FTTH indicates that the fiber further extends to users on user side.
At this moment, fibers have extended to homes and offices and the branch fiber can
access only one user. ITU holds that the distance between the O/E converter (at the
fiber end) and the user interface is no longer than 100 m, so we need not install the
electronic access system on the metal wire. In some cases, however, the broadband
wireless system is used between the O/E converter and the user interface. The FTTH
for commercial users can be also called FTTO. The farthest FTTH is the fiber to the
desk (FTTD).
• In a broad sense, FTTH refers to the fiber to the premise (FTTP). North Americans
always use the term FTTP that includes FTTB, FTTC and the narrow-sensed FTTH.

Present FTTx Status
• The development of FTTH is regional.
– FTTH is highly developed in Japan. Since 2005, the optical access exceeds the xDSL
access.
– FTTH does not develop in North America as highly as that in Japan. The broadband
access in North America has community antenna television (CATV) and ADSL as its
mainstream. In recent years, however, quite a few local governments and medium-or
mini-sized carriers are becoming interested in FTTH.
– FTTH develops slowly in Europe. It is because that the economy is stagnant in
Europe, the head carriers suffer a depressed business, and the government does not
make policy to improve that. In 2004, we develop about 500,000 FTTH users in
Europe, but most of the FTTH projects are for experiment or small-scaled commercial
trials.
– FTTH just begins in the Mid East, but it has a giant potential market there. A lot of
carriers favor the optical access and stop their future plan of copper-based
communication.
– At present, FTTH is in its early days on domestic market. Only a few pilots in some
key cities, and we need a long term to realize the large-scaled commercial use of
FTTH in domestic.

Network Configuration of Triply Play Service (FTTH)
• In the networking mode of the Triple Play service, the VoIP, IPTV and Internet
services are accessed to the MA5680T over the same subscriber cable by ONT.
• The VoIP and IPTV services use the DHCP mode.
– The MA5680T identifies the DHCP option 60 field, and forwards the terminal service
packet to the corresponding DHCP Server by the DHCP Relay. In this case, the
terminal gets the IP address assigned by the DHCP Server.
– The MA5680T transmits the DHCP packet transparently at the layer 2, with the upper-
layer device as its DHCP Relay.
• The Internet service is usually accessed by the PPPoE protocol.
• The middle network configuration is complicated for the multicast service. The
command for configuration is different on various routers. We must enable the
multicast route on the middle router.
– On a mini-network, enable the pim dm.
– On a large network with many program servers, enable the pim sm to avoid the
network congestion caused by the burst of too many multicast streams.

FTTB Network Application

• The MA5680T can be used on the FTTB network to access the high-
bandwidth services, such as the voice, data and video services.
• Compared with the existing DSL network, the FTTB network has the
following advantages:
– Access services with high rate and long distance. The rate for transmitting
data on the DSL network is limited by the length of twisted pairs.
– Save the investment. The FTTB network integrates the all-fiber FTTH
network and the DSL network well. FTTB saves money for customers by
using fibers for long-distance transmission and twisted pairs for short-
distance transmission.
– FTTB has a good compatibility. The FTTB network is compatible with the
DSL network, and they can perform mutual operations.

Configuration of Private Line Service (QinQ)
QinQ private line
The packet that is transmitted on the backbone
network has two 802.1q VLANs, one is the public
network tag, and the other is the private network
tag. The two VLANs are labeled and function as
IP
follows:
 On the ONU of the MA5680T: Corporations are
VLAN3VLAN2 VLAN3VLAN2 accessed by GPON and carried by VLAN. Access
corporations with VLAN1 or VLAN2 to the
MA5680T VLAN3VLAN1 MA5680T
MA5680T, and enable the QinQ function on the
VLAN2 MA5680T. The MA5680T assign a public network
VLAN2
VLAN1
VLAN ID 3 to the corporations, and transmits
their services to the upper-layer network.
 On the OLT of the MA5680T: The users’ packet is

office transmitted on the MAN backbone network in
Corporation 1 Accountant1 Accountant2 Corporation 2
terms of the public network VLAN ID. After the
packet reaches the other side of the MA5680T,
the public network VLAN ID is untagged, and the
packet is restored and transmitted to the device
on the ONU side.

HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES Co., Ltd. HUAWEI Confidential Page 34

Configuration of VLAN Stacking Service
VLAN stacking service
– VLAN expansion: It is used to expand the
number of VLANs and identify users.
– VLAN stacking service: The upper
ISP1 IP
ISP2 network refers to the layer 2 that performs
SP VLAN1 C VLAN2 the VLAN-based and MAC-based
SP VLAN2C VLAN2
forwarding.
SP VLAN1 C VLAN1 SP VLAN2C VLAN1 – The users’ packet is transmitted to the
MA5680T MA5680T and encapsulated with two
VLAN IDs there (external VLAN ID +
internal VLAN ID). The packet is
forwarded to the corresponding ISP in
terms of the external VLAN ID, and the
Corporation 1 Corporation 2
internal VLAN ID is used to identify users.

The VLAN Stacking principle is similar to the QinQ private-line application principle.
They only differ in that the VLAN Stacking labels the users’ packet with two VLAN IDs,
but the QinQ labels the users’ packet with only one VLAN ID.
