CONVERGENCE

 It comes from the Latin Word convergere

– meaning “to incline together”
 It describes a tendency for phenomena
or object to meet
WHAT IS CONVERGENCE THEORY?

 It presumes that as nations

move from the early stages of
industrialization toward
becoming fully industrialized,
they begin to resemble other
industrialized societies in terms
of societal norms and
technology. The characteristics
of these nations effectively
converge.
EARLY CONVERGENCE THEORY

 Inthe 1950's and 1960's, convergence theory was

most closely related to modernization theory.
 Thistheory states that as nations develop, they will
take a path to industrialization similar to the one
Western nations took.
 Both convergence theory and modernization theory
examined the link between economic development
and societal change.
INTERDEPENDENCE

 As nations become more industrialized, the more

interdependent they become. The more
interdependent that they become, the more
similar their cultural norms will become.
 Technology and industrialization has changed us
all, and the biggest change has been that we've
become interdependent.
CATCH - UP EFFECT

 Convergence theory is also known as the catch-up

effect.
 Convergence theorists believe that we're entering
an era in which most nations will be industrialized,
interdependent, and have similar cultures.
 They believe that this will lead to fewer wars.
 Interdependence will lead to decrease in poverty
for third world nations.
SOCIOLOGICAL CRITIQUES OF
CONVERGENCE THEORY
 Type of development often only further enriches the
already wealthy, and/or creates or expands a middle
class while exacerbating the poverty and poor quality of
life experienced by the majority of the nation in question.
 Additionally, it is a form of development that typically
relies on the over-use of natural resources, displaces
subsistence and small-scale agriculture, and causes
widespread pollution and damage to the natural habitat.
DIGITAL CONVERGENCE

 Digital Convergence is the tendency for

different technologies, media, content,
services, and applications to become more
similar with time and available via single
access point.
DIGITAL CONVERGENCE IN EDUCATION

 Digital Convergence brings opportunity and challenge to

education.
 It alters the balance of power in teaching and learning, where
tradition holds that the teacher controlled what was learned as
well as which resources were used to garnet that learning.
 Amidst challenges, convergence in education triggers a move
away from predetermined sorts of adaptive software to software
that is more intuitive and responsive to the learner’s prior
knowledge, level of progress, and readiness for learning.
INSTRUCTIONAL CONVERGENCE

 It uses multiple information sources such as

technology, data, knowledge of exceptional
teaching and deep understanding about how
students learn.
 The result of this is informed instruction that leads
to greater student outcomes.
Why is digital convergence
important ?

 It
is because in today’s technologically advance
world, different forms of technology continue to
be released and are better than their former
models because they can simply do more.
