The Listening
Process
What is listening?
 Listening
is an active process
by which we make sense of,
assess, and respond to what
we hear.
The five stages of listening

Receiving Stage
 This
stage involves hearing
and attending.
Understanding Stage
 The stage of listening during
which the listener determines
the context and meanings of
the words that are heard.
Evaluating Stage
 Itis the listening stage during
which the listener critically
assesses the information they
received from the speaker.
Remembering Stage
 The remembering stage
occurs as the listener
categorizes and retains the
information gathered from the
listener.
Responding Stage
 The listening stage wherein
the listener provides verbal
and/or nonverbal reactions
based on short- or long-term
memory.

Active Listening

communication technique that

feedback on what he/she

way of restating or
paraphrasing what they have
heard in their own words.
