Disciplines and Ideas in the

Social Sciences
(Chapter 1)

Prepared by
RAYED ESCATRON
Learning Competency

• Define Social Science

• Distinguish social science from the natural
science and the humanities
• Appreciate the main goal of Social Science
• Define and describe the procedure of the
scientific method
• Apply the scietific method in social research
• Appreciate the importance of Social Science
WHAT IS SOCIAL SCIENCE AND HOW
IT SHAPES HUMAN’S LIVES?

PART I PART II
SOCIAL SCIENCE
• Study of society and the manner, in which
people behave and influence the world
around us.
• Uttermost goal of social science is to answer
different questions and problems about the
society and human condition on how to
improve it
WHY IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR US HUMANS
TO UNDERSTAND SOCIAL SCIENCE?

• To explain specific behavioural pattern and

human phenomena. It tells us about the
world beyond our immediate experience and
can help explain our own society works – from
the causes of our employment or what helps
economic growth, why people vote, why do
we follow rules, why is social inclusion
important, why is there inequality, what is
there cultural diversity, or what makes people
happy.
WHY SOCIAL SCIENCE IS BEING
RELATED TO NATURAL SCIENCE
AND HUMANITIES?
• Social Sciences main concern is to deal with
aspects of human condition.
• Natural Science main concern is to explain
natural an environmental phenomena.
• Humanities main concern is more on
philosophical side which aims to answer and
interpret big questions like “what is the
meaning of life?”
• Natural Science and Social Science, both of
them can be classified as science. Both uses a
systematic way in explaining a certain theory.
This systematic ways is call SCIENTIFIC
METHOD. Social scientist use this method in
understanding certain social behavior.
• While humanities and social science are
closely related to each other because this two
fields both deal with “humans and its culture”.
(Hunt, 2002)
WHAT IS SOCIAL RESEARCH AND HOW
IMPORTANT IS THE USE OF SCIENTIFIC
METHOD IN SOCIAL RESEARCH?
• Research refers to systematic process of
collecting and logically analyzing information
for some purposes.
• Research helps society to answer questions
that would like to know or find answers to
may questions or find solutions to may
problems in society.
• Social scientist follows a systematic plan,
explore, describe, examine, explain and
predict human behavior or a social issue or
social problem.
• Through research, a social scientist or groups
of scientists can try to find answers to
questions like what is poverty? Who are the
poor? Where are the poor? Why does poverty
exist in society? How to address poverty in
society?
• In pursuing social research, the use of
scientific method is a prerequisite.
• Scientific method refers to systematic,
organized series of steps that ensures
maximum objectivity and consistency in an
investigating phenomenon, acquiring new
knowledge, or correcting and integrating
previous knowledge.
PICTURE ANALYSIS
1. Divide the class into 8 groups and choose
who will facilitate the task/s for this group
activity.
2. Using the picture as showed by your teacher,
answer the following question.
3. You are given 15 minutes to accomplish the
task.
4. You are given 3 minutes to present your
output.
QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED
1. What social issue can you point out of the
picture?
2. Develop a social research problem from
social issue that your group identified.
SEE THE PICTURE BELOW
• State 3 research problems that can be identified in
the picture.
• Which of the research problems presented can be
scientifically studied?
• How can we use the scientific method to pursue as
scientific research out of this research problem?
• What resource materials should we review to know
more about your research topic?
• What hypothesis can we develop out of it?
• What research method could you use to answer our
research problem?
• Where should we get our data?
• Who will be our source of data?
• How are we going to gather data?
• How are we going to analyze the data?
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES YOU NEED
• TEACHER WILL GIVE YOU THE STAGES OF
RESEARCH PROCESS WHICH INDICATES STEPS
AND KEY QUESTION/S AS GUIDE IN
PURSUING SOCIAL RESEARCH.
• METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH TO GATHER
DATA
• CLASSIFICATION OF RESEARCH BY GENERAL
METHODOLOGY
HOW SOCIAL SCIENCE SHAPES LIVES
Social scientist influence our lives usually
without us being aware they are doing so. For
example, a study of behavior of interest
groups, like farmer group or a public transport
group, has shown that if police avoid heavy-
handed tactics this can help maintain crowd
control in potentially hostile situation. Other
research findings have informed policies
aimed at reducing poverty to help poorer
families, like the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino
Program (4Ps).
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING AND
COOPERATION!

LET US HAVE NOW A FORMATIVE QUIZ TO TEST

YOUR UNDERSTANDING!
INDEPENDENT LEARNING
(Answer the Following)
1. Which regions in the Philippines have higher
estimates of poverty incidence? Which regions in the
Philippines have lower estimates of poverty
incidence?
2. How will you assess the state of poverty in the
Philippines at the global level? Compare data from
______, ______, and ______.
3. What social forces could explain poverty incidence on
those regions?
4. What can you say about 4Ps Program of the Philippine
government to address poverty in the country? Are
you amenable to the 4Ps program of the Philippine
government? Explain your position.
