Importance of the scientific way of
planting seedlings
Using the scientific way of planting is important because of the following:
1. You are assured that the plants will go fast, strong, and healthy
2. There is less mortality or death of plants because pests and diseases will be
controlled.
3. More plants can be grown and harvested.
4. You can command good price in selling good quality plants.
5. There is more profit gained when you have more harvest and your plants are
of the best of kind.
Requirements in putting up a nursery
for propagating trees and fruit trees
To put up a nursery, one must consider the following requirements:
1. Location/Site- choose a place near a source of water.
2. Soil type- different plants need different types of soil.
3. Shed- protect the plants from rains and typhoons so it will not be flooded or
destroyed.
4. Storage place for tools and equipment- tools and equipment need to keep in
then storage area after use. Scattered tools can be risky to children.
5. Boxes, pots, and plots for germinating seeds- there are three places to
germinating seeds, young plants and young trees.
TOOLS and EQUIPMENT in
PLANTING
– It is important to know how to use different tools
and equipment in planting. It will make the task
easier and faster. One should use appropriate
tools and equipment into the the work being
done.
– Some of these tools are:
1. Hoe

– A tool used in
digging and
loosening hard
and dry soil. It
has a thin
blade across
the end of a
long handle.
2. Rake

– A long handled tool


having at one end
with teeth in it. It is
used for
smoothening the
soil and gathering
together loose
leaves, hay, or
straw
3. Trowel

– A tool with
curved blade
used for
loosening
ground and
taking up small
plants.
4. Axe

– A with a flat,
sharp blade
fastened to a
handle used for
cutting trunk of
trees and their
branches.
5. Crowbar

– A straight,
heavy iron bar
pointed at one
end about 4
feet in length;
used for
digging holes
for planting
seedlings.
6. Bolo

– A tool with a
wooden or metal
handle from
which a long
blade is attached.
It is use for
cutting tall
grasses and
branches of trees.
7. Shovel

– A tool with a
broad or scoop
attached to a
handle. It is
used to dig, lift,
and throw
loose matter.
8. Fork

– A tool
resembling a
table for but
much bigger in
size. It is used
in digging and
preparing the
soil for the
plants.
9. Water Sprinkler

– A can with a
spout to
sprinkle water
on the plant.
Hose and pail
can be also
used in
watering.

– Pieces of wood
or Bamboo
