TECHNOLOGY FOR BUILDING

THE LEARNING ORGANIZATION

TECHNOLOGY TO MANAGE KNOWLEDGE
1. Technology and Knowledge Flow

Information technology in particular improves communication

by blurring the boundaries within the company and increasing the
range of possible relationships beyond hierarchies

2. Organizational Effects of Technology 3. Technological Support for Knowledge

Management
Michael Morton (1991) identifies six
To assure effective collection, storage, and
major effects of information
transfer of knowledge,
technology on the workplace and
workplace learning learning organizations must implement the
following four procedures,
in sequence.

c. Remote access to national and global
knowledge networks is available at
any time.
d. Sharing information on a real-time.
2. Organizational Effects of Technology
Michael Morton (1991)
identifies six major effects of information
technology on the workplace and workplace learning:

• Fundamental changes in work processes

• Integration of business functions at all levels within and among
organizations
• Shifts in the competitive climate of many industries
• New strategic opportunities to reassess missions and operations
• Basic changes in management and organizational structure
• Organizational transformation by managers

TECHNOLOGY-BASED LEARNING
1. Increased Use of Learning Technologies

In USA, Internet training grew from 3 percent in 1997 to 38 percent in 1999.

Intranet use grew from 3.5 percent to nearly 40 percent in the same year.

2. Types of Learning Technologies

Presentation technologies include:

CBT, Multimedia, Television, etc.

Distribution technologies include:

Electronic mail, Internet, Intranet,
Local Area Network (LAN), satellite TV, etc.

3. Advantages of Learning Technologies

a. Available as needed and just in time

b. Learner-controlled

c. Self-paced and user friendly

d. Accessibility over a wide geographic area

e. Hands-on interactivity

f. Safety and flexibility

g. Ability to update continuously

4. Supplementing Classroom Training and E-Learning

Another development is increasing use of the Internet for learning

applications that supplement classroom learning: e-content matters,
along with e-management, e-collaboration, e-mentoring, e-
simulations, and Webinars

Training programs and classroom instruction will not disappear but

will be complemented by many other approaches to learning and
development, including selfstudy, simulations, coaching, and
teamwork.

In 2001, Amazon, Cisco, Ford, and Procter & Gamble are combining
learning offerings through Internet portals with programs,
assessments, and learner profiles tracked and delivered by
learning-management systems organization wide

5. Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS)

The electronic performance support system (EPSS) is one of the

most powerful and effective uses of technology for managing
knowledge and increasing the efficiency of learning

EPSS Component:
1. Competency profiles: use in HRD departments evaluate
employees for new positions, assess performance problems in
existing jobs, and identify employees who are ready for additional
training or development

2. Expert knowledge bases: all information must be arranged in

formats that are usable by the electronic systems, this process is
called mapping and structuring the data

10
5. Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS)

3. Online help provides screen- and field-specific assistance:

Online documentation includes any continuous improvements
devised by employees

4. Monitoring, assessment, and feedback systems: helps employees

to find out immediately if something is wrong or out of specification
and correct the problems

5. Links to external applications allow workers to jump easily from

one application or software package to another: for example, the
system that easily for drafting a report until access the report.

11
All of this have been implemented by Fed-Ex, Circo, Amazon
since 2001

The conclution is:

An EPSS can be valuable in building a learning organization
because it provides the infrastructure necessary for effective functioning.

12
Fed-Ex, Circo and Amazon build Technology for Building Learning Organization in:

1. Technology-Based Learning for Customer Service

2. Improvement Programs for Customer Service
3. Success of E-Learning
