03 Measurement of crimp
What is Crimp ?
•Crimp in textile fiber is defined as undulation or successions
of waves in the fiber . Which are introduced either naturally
during fiber growth or mechanically/ chemically during
processing .
•Crimp can be considered as the degree of deviation from the
linearity of a non straight fiber .
•It is also called waviness of the fiber.which expressed as
waves or crimps per unit length .
Classification of Crimp
1 -Crimp in yarns
2 - Crimp in staple fiber
a-Helical crimp (wool)
b-Planner crimp (man made fiber)
c-Convolution (cotton)
3- Crimp in filaments
CRIMP MEASUREMENT
Crimp refers to the amount of bending that is done
by thread as it interlaces with the threads that are
lying in the opposite direction of the fabric .
It is denoted by C

FORMULA :-Crimp (C) = length of yarn -- length of the fabric

length of fabric
FACTOR THAT AFFECT CRIMP
1-Physical properties like elasticity ,rigidity ,
bending ,
behavior etc .
2-Count of warp and weft.
3-Thread per inch or cm .
4-Tension on thread
weaving .
5-Yarn and fabric structure
.
IMPORTANCE OF CRIMP IN TEXTILE
FIBER

1 Fiber crimp characteristics have a big influenca on the processing

performance (carding ,drawing ,combing ,s pinning ) of the fiber .
2 Helical crimp found in wool has a three dimensional shape ,this crimp
causes a high degree of bulk ,good thermal isolation and pleasant
tactile properties .
3 Helical crimp in wool is inherent and very stable due to this wool fiber
reveal a reversible spring -like return when dried after wetting .
4- In non woven processes ,crimp and crimp retention during
processing are major contribution to processing efficency,
cohesion ,fabric bulk and bulk stability.
5 Crimp contributes essentially to all properries of intermediate
finer assemblies ,yarn and finished fabric .
6 Crimp synthetic fibers increase the bulkiness of the card Web
or sliver and change the handle of the produced fabric .

Crimp Length

Crimp Angle

Crimp Index
05
Crimp Degree
•Crimp Length -Crimp length which is the average length
of fiber in one crimp•

• Crimp Length = average of wave length

2
• Crimp Frequency - It is defined as twice the average of
the inverse of the wave length . It is also called crimp
number .
•Crimp Angle - The crimp angle is the angle
between the two legs of a crimp wave .
•Crimp Index - Crimp index describes the crimp
potential of a textile fiber as its ability to
contract numer tension .
•Crimp Degree- The crimp degree (Kg) is
defined as L0
Lc where ,L0 = length of straightened fiber
Lc= length of the crimped fiber
EFFECT OF CRIMP ON FABRIC PROPERTIES
• Resistance to Abrasion -With the increase of crimp
the abrasion resistance will also increase .
• Shrinkage - With the increase of crimp ,Shrinkage
will decrease .
•Fabric Costing - With increase of crimp,fabric
costing will also increase.
•Faults in Fabric - If there is a variation of crimp in
the thrrads ,then following faults may be found in
fabric -
1 Reduction in strength may occur .
2 Stripes will be seen in yarns dyed cotton fabric
•Fabric Desgin - To achive satisfactory appearance
and requried shape in finished fabric control of
crimp in warp and weft yarn is necessary.
•Fabric Stiffness - It crimp is increased
then stiffness of fabric will decrease .
•Absorbency-With the increase of
crimp, absorbency of the fabric will increase .
•Dimensional Stability -Dimensional stabilitywill
decrease with the increase of crimp .
•Fabric Handle -If crimp is increased then the fabric
will be soft inhandle.
•Dye Take-up -With the increase of crimp the take
up % of dye-up take will also increase .
•Fiber crimp affects the ability of bales to open
up .A high crimp value provides more choesion
so at low crimp fiber bale open easily.
CONCLUS ION
Crimp is an important property that determines
processing behaviour in carding ,combing ,drafting
and fault incidence of yarn.
Crimp Frequency, Amplitude, Crimp stability, Crimp
elongation ,Crimping point are some of the
important properties that determine crimp fiber.
Fiber crimp characteristics have a big influence on
the processing performance of thefibers.
Crimp also contributes essentially to the properties
of intermediate fiber assemblies ,yarn and finished
fabrics.Fiber crimp imparted to synthetic fibers
which are initially straight, make it possible to
process these fibers with existing machinery
designed for natural fibers .
