Air pollution
• Outdoor air pollution is a major environmental health problem
affecting everyone in low, middle, and high-income countries.
Main air pollutants:
Natural sources
Stationary sources
Mobile sources
Air Pollution Effects
• Ambient (outdoor) air pollution in both cities and rural areas was
estimated to cause 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide per year in
2016; this mortality is due to exposure to small particulate matter of 2.5
microns or less in diameter (PM2.5),
• cardiovascular diseases
• respiratory diseases
• cancers.
Why PM2.5?
• PM2.5 refers to particulate
matter (ambient airborne
particles) which measure up
to 2.5 microns in size.
• Due to its small size PM2.5 is
able to penetrate deep into
the human respiratory system
and from there to the entire
body, causing a wide range of
short- and long-term health
effects.
How to improve air quality?
• The US AQI converts pollutant concentrations into a color-coded scale of 0-
500, to easily represent the level of associated health risk.
How to improve air quality?
• In Monterrey there are eleven air sampling stations, to assess their
quality
