Ground Pumice

What is Pumice ?
- Pumice , it has hollow and foam appearance.
- Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a
volcano. The unusual foamy configuration of pumice happens because of simultaneous rapid
cooling and internal gas extraction.
- It has high heat and sound insulation properties thanks to the pores in its structure. The
pores are usually unconnected and empty. Due to this , it’s light and can float on water for a
long time.
- Permeability is low and isolation is quite high. Thanks to this properties, Pumice provides
high insulation against cold in winter and heat2 in summer.
Chemical Components[1]

• SiO2 content of pumice brings abrasive properties therefore,

pumice has a chemical structure that can easily abrade the
steel.
• Al2O3 composition in the chemical structure of pumice
gives high resistance to fire and heat.

It has amorph state and two types of pumice are observed.

These are acidic pumice and basic pumice.
Acidic pumice white and dirty white color. Hardness according to
Mohs scale 5-6.The density is 0.5-1 g / cm3 .
Basic pumice brown or black and heavier. Hardness 5-6, density
1 -2 gr / cm3.

Ground Pumice Effects in Fresh Concrete

• Ground pumice used concrete’s unit weight and slump value of the
fresh concrete decreased.
• It is also known that the increase in the addition of pumice has a
negative effect on the setting time of the cement.
• Especially, it is recommended to use together with chemical
additives, because the water absorption capacity of ground
pumice is very high.

5
Ground Pumice Effects in Hardened Concrete

• Pumice aggregate-containing concrete has a significant advantage over

normal concrete, because it is more elastic so, more resistant to
earthquakes.
• It is accepted that up to 20% safer than normal concrete in terms of fire
resistance.
• Depending on the nature of the pumice, 15% to 25% cement filler material
was used according to ASTM standards. In the case of higher pumice
additions, it was seen that there were problems in the strength of the
samples.
• It has 6 times more heat insulation than normal concrete.
6
Ground Pumice Effects in Hardened Concrete

• Pumice concrete has superior resistance to harsh weather conditions like

freezing and thawing.
• The fc values of the concretes produced with ground pumice additive is
lower than the control concrete in the early days due to the decrease in the
amount of cement. However, as cure age progresses, it is observed that this
decrease has decreased to very small values.
• Pumice used concrete has more corossion possibility so , it should be mixed
with silica fume to decrease.

7
Effect of Ground Pumice on Concrete Compressive Strength[7]

• As we can see in ES1 Specimen , combining with silica fume in

concrete has a great benefit on a compressive strength of a concrete
in early and late ages.
Suggestions

◍ If we analyze the previous studies , as a result we should use ground
pumice with silica fume together.
◍ We have a great reserve in our country but we have little amount of
studies about pumice. It’s a kind of sad. Academician and students should
attention on it.
