Cheerleaders were a
common sight on the
basketball court as well as
the football field.
In the 1960’s, the
cheerleaders began using
pom poms, as its most
widely recognized prop at
present.
In the 1980’s, cheerleading
competitions, organized
by the National
Cheerleaders Association
and other groups, started
to grow in popularity.
At present, the sport has
spread from the U.S. to
many other countries,
making its way to our
country, the Philippines.
Any cheer dance lesson
must begin with the basic
arm motions. These set
the stage for everything
else.
Ready Position - This is a basic
starting position for almost
every routine. Feet are
shoulder width apart and both
hands are in fists resting just
where the hips begin. Elbows
should be straight out to the
sides and not pointed to the
front.
Clasp: A clap where
you connect palms
and wrap your
fingers around the
outside of your
hands
T: Arms
stretched out
to the sides at
shoulder level
Broken T: Elbows stretched
out to the sides at shoulder
level, with hands at the
edge of your chest
Touchdown:
Arms extended
straight up, hands
shoulder width
apart
Low V: Arms extended
straight down and out to
the sides at a 45-degree
angle
High V: Arms extended up
and out to the sides at a
45-degree angle
Right Punch: Place your left
hand on your hip with your
elbow straight out to your side.
The right arm should be straight
up beside your ear.
Left Punch: Reverse the motion
and put your right hand on your
hip and your left arm straight up
in the air.
Daggers: Elbows tucked
tightly into your ribcage
with your hands facing one
another at shoulder level
Clean: Arms drawn
straight down and pulled
tightly to the sides of your
body.
Right High and Left High V
Right and Left K
Right and Left Punch. To perform a
right punch, as shown above, place
your left hand on your hip with your
elbow straight out to your side. The
right arm should be straight up
beside your ear. To perform a left
punch, reverse the motion and put
your right hand on your hip and
your left arm straight up in the air.
Cheerleading in the
Philippines officially
emerged in 1993 when the
Cheerleading Philippines
Federation (CPF) was
officially founded.
The CPF is the “is the
national confederation
of Cheerleading
organizations. It is the
national governing body of
Cheerleading and Cheer
Dance in the country.
Cheerleading in the Philippines has
three major competitions. These
three competitions are the
University Athletic Association of
the Philippines (UAAP) Cheerdance
Competition, National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA)
Cheerleading Competition and the
National Cheerleading
Championships (NCC).
The UAAP Cheerdance
Competition, founded in 1994, is an
annual one-day event of the
University Athletic Association of
the Philippines for cheerleading,
usually held at the Araneta
Coliseum.
The National Cheerleading
Chamionship (NCC) was recently
founded in 2006.
