Cheerdancing
rooted from
cheerleading.
 Crowds have been
cheering since the
advent of sports, but
it wasn’t until the late
1800’s that organized
cheering came to be.
 In 1883, Great Britain
started the trend of
cheering and chanting at
sports games, but the first
official cheer wasn’t
performed until 1884 at
Princeton University in
Princeton, New Jersey.
 One member of the
Princeton audience, Mark
Peebles, brought
cheerleading with him to
University of Minnesota
and created a specific set
of cheers for each different
game.
 Peebles tool it upon himself
to lead the UOM crowd
during football games, but
another UOM student,
named Johnny Campbell,
took organized cheering
even further by coordinating
an entire team to the lead
the crowd.
 From that day-
November 2, 1898-
forward, Campbell
was known as the
world’s first official
cheerleader.
 In the 1920’s, drums and
noisemakers were used by
the yell leaders. Moreover,
for the first few decades of
its history, cheerleading
was an all-male activity,
but by this time, women
also became active.
 In the 1930’s,
universities and high
schools began
performing pom-pon
routines and using
paper poms.
 In the early 1940's, when
men went to war, women
not only went to work, but
also on to cheerleading
squads. Cheerleading then
became more as a female
sport.
 When the men returned
from war, new twists and
turns were added.
Gymnastics were always
done by men, while the
girls danced. This gave rise
to dance teams.
 In 1948, Laurence "Hurkie"
Hurkimer (founder of the
spirit industry) formed the
National Cheerleaders
Association (NCA) as a
way to hold cheerleading
clinics.
 In the 1950’s, as collegiate
sports grew in popularity,
so did cheerleading.

 Cheerleaders were a
common sight on the
basketball court as well as
the football field.
 In the 1960’s, the
cheerleaders began using
pom poms, as its most
widely recognized prop at
present.
 In the 1980’s, cheerleading
competitions, organized
by the National
Cheerleaders Association
and other groups, started
to grow in popularity.
 At present, the sport has
spread from the U.S. to
many other countries,
making its way to our
country, the Philippines.
 Any cheer dance lesson
must begin with the basic
arm motions. These set
the stage for everything

the sides at a 45-degree
angle

45-degree angle
 Right Punch: Place your left
hand on your hip with your
elbow straight out to your side.
The right arm should be straight
up beside your ear.
 Left Punch: Reverse the motion
and put your right hand on your
