 Dengue is an acute viral infection with potential fatal complications

 The word “dengue” is derived from the Swahili phrase Ka-dinga pepo,
meaning “cramp-like seizure” and also known as breakbone fever.

 It is found in tropical and subtropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban


and semi-urban areas.

 It is a positive-stranded encapsulated RNA virus belonging to the family


Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus and are divided into four antigenically distinct
serotypes DENV-1-4
Virus enter into the gut & replicates.

Infects the salivary glands during an extrinsic incubation period of 8–12 days.

Then virus transmitted to uninfected person through its anticoagulants during


biting.

Virus then replicates in the second person and produces symptoms which
appears after 4-7 days of biting. This is the intrinsic incubation period.
