INTRODUTION

• There are many causes of bearing damage . it is not always

easy to determine the exact cause. But most bearing failures
Can be attributed to one or more of the following.
TYPES OF BEARING FAILURE

 Contamination
1.Grooving 2.Pitting 3.Etching
• Misalignment

• Overload
• Effects of Electrical Current

• Improper mounting
COLD PILGER MILL
EXISTING TECHNOLOGY
• LIP SEALS:-
• Can not effectively protect your
bearing life
• Can not fully prevent moisture or
particle ingress, resulting in bearing
failure.
• Have a short service life.
• Lip seal reliance surface contact
between seal and shaft result in costly
damage to shaft
• Material
It generally made of elastomer material,
however thermoplastic and nitrile rubur
are used
NEED OF PROJECT

• To improve bearing life

• To reduce damage of shaft

• To prevent the losses of oil from bearing chamber.

• Keep water, dust and contamination out.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

• In cold pilger mill probability of bearing failure due to

contamination.

• Lip seal reliance surface contact between seal and shaft result

in costly damage to shaft.

OBJECTIVES

• To eliminate the failure due to contamination.

• Providing appropriate seals.

• reduce shaft damage.

• Increase sealing life.

EXPECTED BEARING LIFE
• Calculation life cycle of bearing:
• Bearing no:77752(Timken standard)
• Four row tapered roller bearing
Bore dia. = 260mm
• Outer dia. = 400mm
• Dynamic capacity of bearing = 2870kN
• Load = 80-100 Ton
• e = (10/3)
• n = 82rpm
• Bearing life (L10) = {(C/P)^(e)*10^6}/(60*n
• =
{(2870/981)^(10/3)*10^6}/(60*82)
• = 7303hrs.

CRACKLE TASTE

• An easy, non-quantified method of determining the presence of

water in grease is known as the “crackle test.” To perform this
test, place a sample of grease on a piece of aluminium foil and
put a flame under the foil . If the grease melts and lightly
smokes, the presence of water is minimal. However, if the
grease crackles, sizzles and/or pops, the grease contains a
considerable amount of water.

MODIFIED TECHNOLOGY
LABYRINTH SEAL:
• An advanced bearing protection seal that eliminates bearing oil
contamination and has life expectancy that far exceeds typical
bearing life.
• It is a non contact type seal which eliminates shaft damage.
• It offers dust type protection against solids and liquids.
MATERIAL PROPERTIES

• Medium carbon steel (EN8)

EN8 steel material is suitable for the all genaral
engineering application .
• Tensile strength = 550 mpa
• Yield strength = 280 mpa
MOUNTING OF LABYRINTH RING

• Shrink-fitting is a technique in which an achieved by a

relative size change after assembly.

• This is usually achieved by heating or cooling one component

before assembly and allowing it to return to the ambient
temperature after assembly, employing the phenomenon of
thermal expansion.

CONCLUSION

• Main objective is to reduce bearing failure by contamination

in the cold pilger mill and reduce maintenance cost. A
labyrinth seal is used provided as per design and improve
operational profit.

• After using this labyrinth seal we have reduced the operational

losses and improved the machine life.
