Introduction:
 The regula falsi method of false position or false position
method is a very old method for solving an equation in one
unknown that in modified form is still in use.
 In simple terms, the method is the trial and error technique .
 There are two historical types in regula falsi method they are:
 simple false position
 double false position
 The simple false position technique is found in cuneiform tablets
from ancient Babylonian mathematics and in papyri from
ancient Egyptian mathematics.
 Double false position arose in late antiquity as a purely
arithmetical algorithm. In the ancient Chinese mathematical dated
from 200 BC to AD 100.
 Regula falsi method is also referred as "guess and check” method.
Graphical Representation:
Equation of chord AB in two point form is
x – x1 = y-f(x1)
x1 – x2 f(x1)-f(x2)
put y=0
x-x1 = f(x1)(x1-x2)
x1-x2 f(x1)-f(x2)
x3=x1f(x1)-x1f(x2)-x1f(x1)+x2f(x1)
f(x1)-f(x2)
x3=x1f(x2)-x2f(x1)
f(x2)-f(x1)
where f(x1).f(x2)<0
Xn+1=xn-1f (xn)-xn f(xn-1)
f(xn) f(xn-1)
where f(xn-1).f(xn)<0
Procedure for false position method :
 Choose two initial values x1,x2 (x2>x1) such that f(x1),f(x2) are of
opposite signs so that there is a root in between x1 and x2.
 Let x3 be the next approximation now the formula is
x3=x1f(x1)-x2f(x1)
f(x2)-f(x1)
 Find f(x3) if f(x3)f(x2)<0 then go to step 4 otherwise name x1 and
x2 then go to step 4
 Calculate the next successive approximation using the formula
xn+1=xn-1f(xn)-xn f(xn-1)
f(xn)-f(xn-1)
 Stop this process when we reach the accuracy.
Find the root of equation x³-x-4=0 by using false position method?
Solution: Given that
f(x)=> x³-x-4=0
f(0)= -4<0
f(1)= -4<0
f(2)= 2>0
f(1)<0 , f(2)>0 =>f(1).f(2)<0
so root lies between 1 and 2
where x0=1 f(x0)= -4
x1=2 f(x1)= 2
x2= x0.f(x1) – x1.f(x0)
f(x1) – f(x0)
= 1(2) – 2(-4)
2 - (-4)
x2=1.666 x5= x1.f(x4) – x4.f(x1)
f(x2)=f(1.666)= -1.041<0 f(x4) – f(x1)
x5=1.796
x3= x1.f(x2) – x2.f(x1) f(x5) = f(1.796) = -0.00279
f(x2) – f(x1)
=2(-1.041) – 1.666(2) x6= x1.f(x5) – x5.f(x1)
-1.041 – 2 f(x5) – f(x1)
x3=1.7803 x6=1.7962
f(x3) = f(1.7803) = -0.137<0
The required root is 1.7962
x4= x1.f(x3) – x3.f(x1)
f(x3) – f(x1)
x4=1.794
f(x5)= f(1.794) = -0.175<0
ADVANTAGES:
1.It doesn’t require the derivative calculation.
2.This method has first order rate of convergence i.e it is linearly
convergent.

DISADVANTAGES :
1.As it is trail and error method in some cases it may take large time
span to calculate the correct root
2.It is used calculate only single unknown in the equation.
3.It cant predict number of iterations to reach a given precision.

APPLICATIONS:
1.Regula Falsi Method is applied to prediction of trace of quantities
of air pollutants produced by combustion reactions which are found
near industrial points.
