 THE HISTORY OF ALCOHOLISM

• Alcoholism has been around since alcohol existed. Alcoholism has always been a
significant problem. Local governments have always struggled to control
drunkenness instead of controlling alcohol itself. People used to consume alcohol
way more than they did water because in earlier times alcohol was a lot safer to drink
than water. Alcoholism continued to grow and it became rampant in the United States.
Alcoholism caused many people to become addicted to other drugs as well. In 1920,
the Prohibition Act was passed. This act banned everything except the consumption
of alcohol. The manufacture, importation, exportation, sale, distribution, or
transportation was made illegal due to the Prohibition Act.
THE HISTORY OF ALCOHOLISM CONTINUED

• The ban on alcohol actually made things worse. The ban of alcohol made
things worse because alcohol started to be sold on the black market.
That caused a lot more alcohol related deaths because the alcohol being
sold on the black market was not being properly made and many times
the alcohol was spiked with many harsh chemicals. In 1993, the country
had enough with the ban on alcohol and the government repealed the
prohibition act. People continued to abuse alcohol all throughout history.
Alcoholics were usually treated horribly because people saw them as
corrupt and wicked. Because alcoholics were viewed this way it was hard
for them to receive quality treatment. In 1935 a support group and rehab
center for alcoholics was founded called Alcoholics Anonymous, also
known as A.A.
 MODERN ALCOHOLISM

• Today alcoholism is still just as bad and it is considered a disease and is treated as
such. The treatment today is usually very successful and the process is a lot better
now. The most common treatments are rehabs, support groups and programs. We
have come very far in technology and in science so we are able to further out
understanding of what causes the addiction and it allows us to find new and better
ways to treat alcoholism.

 ALCOHOLISM IN THE SWEET HEREAFTER

• In the novel The Sweet Hereafter one of the characters suffers from alcoholism. Bill Ansel
drinks a lot because he is trying to use alcohol to forget about his wife and two children
that died in the bus accident. Bill Ansel continues to drink more and more alcohol
because he is constantly grieving over the loss of his wife and children. He is trying to use
alcohol as a solution to not feel any pain. Many alcoholics drink a lot of alcohol in order to
cope with the loss of a loved one and that is exactly what Bill Ansel is doing. Alcoholics
tend to be more violent and hostile. Bill Ansel started to become hostile toward a lot of
people. Alcohol caused Bill to be violent towards Mitchell when he approached him about
the case. That is just some of the bad effects of alcohol that we can see in this novel and in
real life. This novel does a great job showing people the causes and effects of alcohol and
how some people abuse it.
