THE SELF IN
THE AGE OF
TECHNOLOGY
In the past, interpersonal
relationships can only be
established through face-to-face
interactions within physical
communities. Nowadays, people
can interact with each other even if
they were far from each other.
SOCIAL MEDIA
- Is defined as the websites and applications that
make it easier to create and share information,
ideas, and interests. This also allows people to
create other forms of self- expressions via virtual
communities and networks.
- Chat, video call, posting of status and photos.

ONLINE DISEMBODIMENT
- People may act differently since interaction in social
media do not happen face-to-face and there is no
physical appearance required.
- Individuals are prone to create digital identities,
which are different from their “REAL SELVES”

IDENTITY
People generally have ROLE IDENTITIES
- The SELF is composed of identities ranked by
importance.
- The greater the commitment of an individual
to a particular identity, the greater the
importance of this identity and it influences
the behavior of the individual
- One’s online identity enables him or her to
participate in a virtual society
- Online activities such as chatting, blogging,
and even shopping online would require the
person to establish a “digital identity”
- Likes, comments and shares
- According to Turkle (1995) , people can
redefine themselves on internet. Assumptions
make on the vitual world are different from
those of real life.
ONLINE
DISINHIBITION
EFFECT
When people adopt fake identities, they are likely
to engaged in behaviors that they would not do in real
life interactions. This effect is called online
disinhibition.

TWO MAIN CATEGORIES:

*BENIGN DISINHIBITION
- People tend to self-disclose more on the
internet that they would in real life go out
of their way to help someone or show
kindness.
*TOXIC DISINHIBITION
- Using of rude language, bully or threaten
others on online platforms and go to websites
with contents of violence, crimes and
pornography.
MANAGING RESPONSIBLE
ONLINE BEHAVIOR
1. Do not post or send anything that will embarrass you.
2. Avoid posting statements when experiencing strong
emotions.
3. Do not hang out with the “wrong crowd” offline.
4. Be careful with oversharing especially confidential
information that maybe used irresponsibly.
5. Respect other people in the online community.
6. Do not hang out with the “wrong crowd” online.
