THUMBS UP OR DOWN
• Everyone is a philosopher.
• Children can philosophize.
• Questioning leads to philosophizing.
• Mentally disturbed people philosophize.
• There are times that people answer in non -
philosophical ways.
PHILOSOPHY AS A CONCEPT
• Philosophy is a system of beliefs about reality.
• It is one's integrated view of the world.
• It includes an understanding of the nature of
existence, man, and his role in the world. It is a
necessary product of man’s rational mind.
PHILOSOPHY AS A PROCESS
• Philosophy is employed as a method of inquiry.
• It is an engagement in the search for the meaning of
life, its value and relevance.
• It is a process for finding significance in existence.
DOING PHILOSOPHY IS A LIFETIME
PROCESS
According to Pythagoras, no man can
fully possess the comprehensive and
profound knowledge of everything. For
him,. knowledge of all things is the sole
privilege of God alone.

The more we know, the more we

do not know. The more we
have, the more we want more.

we are?

KNOWLEDGE VS.
WISDOM
Knowledge is knowing that tomato is a fruit
Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit
salad
Philosophy is asking if ketchup is a fruit
shake.
KNOWLEDGE
•IT IS A BODY OF FACTS, THEORIES,
AND IDEAS THAT ONE CAN
ACCUMULATE THROUGH
OBSERVATION,YEARS OF STUDY,
RESEARCH, AND EXPERIENCE.
WISDOM
•IS THE ABILITY TO DISCERN WHICH
OF THESE CONCEPT ARE CORRECT
AND RIGHT, AND THE ABILITY TO
JUDGE HOW TO APPLY THESE IN
DAILY LIFE.
1. WHAT DO YOU OBSERVE IN THE
EQUATION?
2. DO YOU THINK IT’S CORRECT? WHY OR
WHY NOT.
SITUATION #1

There was an airplane crash, every single

person on board died, but yet two
people survived. How is this possible?
SITUATION #2

What goes up and never

comes down?
SITUATION #3

Imagine you are in a sinking row

boat surrounded by sharks. HOW
WOULD YOU SURVIVE?

THREE LEVELS OF INQUIRIES

1. Common Sense - a basic ability to

perceive, understand, and judge things
that are shared by (common to)
nearly all people without need for
debate.

2. Scientific- Based on or
characterized by the methods
and principles of science.

3. Philosophical - relating or
devoted to the study of the
fundamental nature of
knowledge, reality and existence
•What did you
observed in the video?
•As we all know magic uses
tricks but with that we
ponder, ask, curious and
wonder.
•Like, we wonder how come
that the word “proud”
picked by Angel Locsin
known by the magician as it
shown in the video.
•Like the crowd being amazed
and bewildered when the
magician revealed the word
written in the confetti is the
same as Vice Ganda picked
•Like, we wonder why you girls get the
feeling of being hurt when your
heartbroken or broke up with your
boyfriend same as for the boys, vice-
versa.

PHILOSOPHY
M I C H A E L R . B U S TO S
•What do you usually think
whenever you experience
emotional pain? Problems?
Sufferings?
•Why is there a need to
philosophize?
•One view is that
each one of us is a
philosopher.
•We all have the potential to
philosophize since we have
the tendency to wonder and
doubt.
•We possess the capacity to
reflect on our experiences, and
we have a never-ending need to
learn and discover.
SENSE OF WONDER
•Whenever we confronted with an
experience, we always wonder how it
came to be.
•Man’s over bounding curiosity drives him
to ask questions, some of which have no
definite answers.
WONDER
•Something or someone that is very
surprising, beautiful, amazing etc.
•A feeling caused by seeing
something that is very surprising
•A feeling doubt or uncertainty
DOUBT
•To be uncertain about something
•To be believe that something may
not be true or is unlikely
•To have no confidence
DOUBT
• Rene Descartes was famous for rejecting or
questioning established ideas, and he even went
as far as doubting his own ideas. Page 7
• His method of examining ideas and
perspectives became the basis of critical
thinking and analysis in the sciences.
LIMIT SITUATIONS
• KARL JASPERS BELIEVED THAT MAN IS OFTEN
CONFRONTED BY EXPERIENCES WHICH
CHALLENGE HIS IDEAS AND FRAMEWORKS.
• THESE ARE OFTEN ACCOMPANIED BY FEELINGS
OF HELPLESSNESS, ANXIETY, OR DREAD.
•“All men by nature desire to know.” –
Aristotle
…. Because man is always searching for
truth.
FOR JASPERS

•PHILOSOPHY PROVIDES US A MEANS

TO UNDERSTAND ADVERSE OR
CHALLENGING CONDITIONS, AND
RISE ABOVE THEM AND GAIN
KNOWLEDGE AND PERSPECTIVES.
HOW DO WE CHARACTERIZE THE
STUDY OF PHILOSOPHY?
1. One way of looking at philosophy is to
consider it as a way of analyzing
framework.
• FRAMEWORK –is defined as a way of
thinking about the world and is composed of
the views and beliefs of a person.
2. Philosophy can also be thought of
as examination of a particular area
of knowledge.
3. Philosophy itself is a distinct
area of knowledge with its own
goal, concerns, and ways of doing
things.
BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY
1.Aesthetic – deals with the study of
beauty and what makes things “beautiful.”
2.Logic – is the branch of philosophy which
deals with correct reasoning
3.Epistemology – discusses the nature of
knowledge and knowing
BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY
3. Ethics – is the branch which deals with moral
questions and dilemmas
4. Political Philosophy – studies government and
deals with questions of justice, power and the
rights and obligations of citizens.
5. Metaphysics – is the branch of philosophy
which deals with questions regarding reality
and existence.
Man is a questioning being.
And got no “definite
answers” that’s why we
always wonder and keep
on searching answers.
