Introduction to Reservoir Engineering

Part 1- Reservoir Characterization

1- Introduction
Ammar Jelassi
ENIM 191101
Course Contents
• Reservoir Eng’g’s purposes: Evaluation of HCOIP &
Recoverable Reserves, uncertainty; well potential;
Reservoir Development Optimization; & monitoring.
• The 1st Part, Reservoir Characterization, focuses on:
Rock & Fluid Properties, Logging, HCOIP Estimation.
• Rock Properties are evaluated from various sources,
esp. core analysis (incl. SCAL), logs. Fluid properties
from Lab (PVT) & Correlations. These data plus
seismic data are used to build a geological model &
estimate HCOIP (with a probabilistic approach),
with updating after development based on new
data (static & dynamic).
Notes
• The commercial value of a Reservoir depends on its
Recoverable Reserves (linked to HCOIP- determined
by its extent, rock & fluid properties- & the Drive
Mechanisms), well deliverability (linked to rock &
fluid properties & the selected completion scheme).
• Oil commercial value depends on its PVT properties
• While the course focuses on Conventional HCs,
Tight O/G & Shale O/G are of interest for Tunisia.
• American practical units are used. Main conversion
factors to International units given in attached table
