2
General Overview
● Need to transfer heat for different operations
to or from various fluid streams in various
equipment
● A heat exchanger is a device where two fluids
streams come into thermal contact in order to
add or remove heat depending on the stream
of interest.
● Heat exchangers may be categorized into
three general classes depending on the relative
orientation of the flow direction of the two fluid

Theory
● Heat exchangers are used to add or
remove heat from hot or cold streams.
● Common heat exchangers used in
industry are shell and tube, air cooled or
plate and frame
● Parameters of Interest:
○ Heat Duty (Overall Enthalpy
Change) https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/tantalum-fantastic-material-chemical-

○ Heat transfer coefficient (U) application-heat-tommasone

○ LMTD
○ Overall Conductance(UA)
○ Heating and Cooling Utilities

After simulation:

● Go to Thermal Results Exchanger Details

● Go to Summary
● Generate heating and cooling curves
○ Select Hot HCurves or Cold HCurves
○ Click New
○ Select Next to run simulation
○ Create plot of data in results tab by selecting Custom, the desired variables, and OK

11
Demonstration-Shortcut
Must first specify fluids being heated or cooled

Must specify method or model

Choose heat exchanger

Add input and output streams

Must specify input stream properties and a utility if used

Must specify block properties

Run simulation
12
Demonstration-Rigorous
Same initial steps as shortcut

Must specify type of heat exchanger

Must specify hot side

Size heat exchanger

Specify geometry, fouling, and pressure drop

Click size heat exchanger

May get warnings if something was left unspecified

Run simulation

May get vibration error
