1
MULTILEVEL INVERTER
 Power electronic device that can be operated in renewable
energy resources.

 Operated to lower the harmonics

Classification of MLI’s:

 Diode-clamped MLI

 Capacitor clamped MLI

 Cascade H-bridge(CHB) MLI.

 Asymmetrical and symmetrical MLI.

2
MLI TOPOLOGIES

3
SYMMETRIC MULTILEVEL INVERTERS
 Symmetric configuration- the magnitude of input DC sources
is equal.

 Number of output levels are less.

 More number of switches with increased total harmonic

distortion (THD).

 Cost of switches, area required, control circuit and complexity

increases.

4
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM OF SYMMETRIC MLI

 Magnitude of dc source are

identical.

 17 level symmetrical MLI-

8 dc source

20 switches

16 diodes

5
ASYMMETRIC MULTILEVEL INVERTERS

 Asymmetric MLI- input DC sources are unequal.

 Different voltage levels can be generated.

 By combining such voltage levels more levels can be

generated.

 With a lesser number of switches - reduction in THD.

 Asymmetrical topology requires only twelve switches to obtain

7,9,11,13,15 ,17 level output voltage.

 Symmetrical topology 12,16,20,24,28 switches are needed.

SQUARE T-TYPE (ST-TYPE) TOPOLOGY
 ST-Type module with a new component arrangement
including 12 switches, 12 diodes and 2 unequal DC source
pairs.

 The module can be connected together as cascade

connection easily to generate more and higher output .

 This arrangement sources produces 17 levels (8 positive

levels, 8 negative levels and zero level).

 Also it can be extended as cascade connection in two

strategies to achieve more levels.

INVERTER

10
Advantages:

 Inherent creation of the negative voltage levels without any

additional circuit.

 Manufacturing process to be done more quickly and cheaply

 Simple voltage balancing modulation.

Disadvantages:

 More switches and diodes

 Switching loss high

 Separate DC sources are required.

 Switching loss high

11
S3CM TOPOLOGY

 Voltage boosting capability which has made the reduction in

the number of dc sources possible.

 A two-stage topology consisting of a switched-capacitor circuit

and an H-bridge

 Withstand voltage twice of the input dc source

 Demerits overcome by single-stage switched-capacitor

module (s3cm).

12
 Consist of twelve switches, two capacitors and only one

dc source.

 Number of levels increased by cascading multiple (N)

modules.
