Guidelines for National Highways

• Width of Median in national highways is about 2 meters to 4.5 meters

• Suitable antiglare measures such as metal/plastic screens shall be provided in flat stretches
or on horizontal curves to reduce headlight glare from opposite traffic
• The total height of screen including the height of the barrier shall be 1.5 m
• In the sections of the Project Highway where median width is more than 3 m, shrubs shall
be planted and maintained to cut off headlight glare from traffic in the opposite direction
• The height of shrubs shall be maintained at 1.5m to cut off the effect of traffic lights
coming from the opposite direction
• Average speed of vehicles in national highways is about 70 kmph

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

• The main rotor shaft arranged vertically

• The advantage here comes as a reduction in parts
• The blades of a VAWT catch wind in any direction without directional orientation
• Maintenance costs are further reduced because gearboxes, generators, and most
electrical and mechanical components are at or near ground level

Savonius Wind Turbine
• The Savonius turbine is S-shaped if viewed from above.
• This drag-type VAWT turns relatively slowly, but yields a high torque.
• It is useful for grinding grain, pumping water, and many other tasks

Darrieus Wind Turbine

• The Darrieus turbine is the most famous vertical axis wind turbine
• It is characterized by its C-shaped rotor blades which give it its eggbeater appearance
• It is normally built with two or three blades

Giromill Wind Turbine

• The giromill is typically powered by two or three vertical aerofoils attached to the central mast by
horizontal supports
• Giromill turbines work well in turbulent wind conditions and are an affordable option where a
standard horizontal axis windmill type turbine is unsuitable.

Calculations
Let us consider the length of 1 km national highway

Every 2 meters there is a turbine

Therefore for 1 km, the number of turbines = 1000/2 =500 units
Each turbine has a rating of 300 Watts
Total installed capacity = 300x500 = 1500000 watts
OR = 150kW

Power generated in one year for 1 km length = 150k*6*365 = 328500kWatts

Which is equal to 3,28,000 units of energy per year

Advantages of the Proposal

• VAWT is independent of wind direction

• Large amount of wind energy can be extracted during more traffic
• Easy to maintain, and has low noise level
• Lot of area can be saved by using medians of highways to generate power
• Transmission losses can be eliminated
• Charging points can be set up in national highways to charge the electric vehicles
• Wind turbines acts as antiglare protection which is very much needed in national highways
