INTRODUCTION
• Mittai Theruvu or sweet meet (sm street)is one of the most popular and
historic trade centers in kerala.it is situated in the kozhikode or calicut town
in northern kerala. This is one of the most busiest streets and shopping
sports in calicut . The area will be crowded always , espacially in the evenings.
There are many famous Bakeries situated in this street. Earlier this street was
famous for “Kozhikoden Halwa” or sweet meat. Now a days , one can buy
anything and everything including kozhikoden halwa, banana chips and
variety of other sweets, garments, footwear, bangles, kitchen utensils etc.
And the street got this name by from the europeans. In earlier
times, the street was filled with kozhikoden halwa shops. The europeans called
the halwa as sweet meet. So they named the street sweet meet street or SM
street. The earlier name of SM street was “HUZOOR ROAD”
The oldest film (Radha Theater(1937)), the oldest bakeries,
oldest photo studios,textile shops etc are near this street. The khadi Emporium
of calicut international Airport is about 25 km away from SM street . While
visiting this street ,one should remember “SK POTTAKAD” ,. The famous writer of
malayalam who loved this town, and written about a lot about the place .
Especially in this “ ORU THERUVINTE KADHA” (the study of a street).
2.SIGNIFICANTS OF THE STUDY

The retail industry is constantly changing and there are always new
challenges faced by the players in this competitive industry. Although we
have seen quite a lot of retail bankruptcies, but there are also many major
retailers that have managed to survive and even grow their business.
They have proven to be able to face major challenge within the industry.
Customer preferences will always change , sometimes even fasternthan you
can imagine. As a retailer should be able to keep up with the seasonal trends
as well as the customer shopping behaviour.
3.SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Retailers purchase products for the purpose of reselling them to consumers
in order to make a profit .Retail stores tend to cluster together in order to all
attract sufficient customer traffic, in traditional town centers location
,suburban shopping centre,edge –of town, on retail parks or in retail village .
Retailing includes all the activities involved in selling goods or services directly
to final consumes for there personal non-business use. With the increase in
the purchasing power of the people and the rural reach of the retailers,the
scope of retailing has increased manifold. The scope of retailing can be
viewed from the two view points. One from the retailers ,i e;the
entrepreneurs perspective and the other from the employees perspective.
4.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• Calicut sm street has its own problems. Despite district administration
implementing several fire preventive measures at sm street which has
witnessed several major fire mishaps in two decades koyenco bazar and
oasis compound continue to be a ticking time bomb.
At koyenco Bazar building ,fire extinguishers and fire
systems and dysfunctional at some shops and cloth waste is dumped on
upper floors.These pose a risk to staff ,shoppers.
And also in sm street there is more than 150, shopes
are available for the customers, at the same time, some of these shops faced
lack of area that they want. And its makes the retailers congested . And also
the non-availability of parking area.
5. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
• The study has been designed with the following specific and general
objectives. They are ;
• Specific
• To study about the problems and perspects of retailer services in sm street calicut.

• General
• To identify the problems , that are faced by the retailers in sm street.
• To analyse the opportunities and prospects of retail business in smstreet.
• To offer suggestions on the basis of the findings of the study.
• To study the socio-economic conditions of the retailer in smstreet.
6.METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY
The study is designed as descriptive and analytical one. Considerable data are available both from
primary data, and secondary data. The study is carried out with the help of sample survey . The
research problem and interview schedule have been formulated and tested on the basis of the
research objective.

6.1- types of data


Depending on the source ,it can classify or used primary data or secondary data. Let us take a
look at them both.
-primary data
-primary data are those data which is collected for the first time by the researcher . It is pure
data . Basically, primary data for the analysis are collected from Telephonic interview, Direct
interview, questionair.
-secondary data
These kind of data has already been collected by some researcher or either published or
unpublished source. It is collected from company records and internet etc.
6.2-sampling design
The population of the current study is the retail in sm street, it is not feasible to collect data from
the entire population . There force the researcher has used the sampling technique for the data
collection. The researcher has select 100 sample retailers on the basis of convenience sampling
technique.
6.3-Tools for collecting data
It prepared to collect the primary data with the help of structured question air, interviwe method
and observation method
6.4-tools of analysis
After collecting data,it should be analysed to get the desired result .The tools are t-test,z-test
,annova table chi-square test ,charts ,diagrams .
