STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Public utility buses are the most commonly used vehicle in a long distance
journey passing through provincial and national roads. Problems in bus
transactions are being encountered. Usually, the passengers do not have exact
amount in paying bus fares and the conductors’ method of collection is time
consuming.
Nowadays, buses use two methods of payment process: the manual payment
method, in which the conductor uses puncher to release tickets for the
passenger, and the digital one, in which the conductor uses a handheld device
that print outs receipts to be given to the passengers. These existing methods
are time-consuming, because some bus operators tend to calculate the amount
of fare with the given kilometer and sometimes, inaccurate. Usually, passengers
don’t have an exact amount of money to pay for the bus fare and what they
have to do is to wait for the conductor’s change. Another issue is the accuracy
of giving change.
SMART OBJECTIVES

⮚ Accurate fare matrix and discounts

⮚ Convenient payment method

⮚ Paperless/Trashless
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
1. Automate the manual procedures of reserving a bus ticket
for any journey by providing a web-based bus ticket reservation
function where a customer can buy bus ticket through the
online system without a need to queue up at the counter to
purchase a bus ticket.

2. Develop a device that can scan and accept cards/e-wallet as

mode of payment for the fare of the passenger.

3. Any modern public transport service should offer cashless or

automatic fare collection (AFC), using a stored value card (e.g.
Beep Cards), a credit or debit card to pay for the trip.

PROS OF THE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS
• Easy to use

• Fast transaction

• A fare card has the potential of being registered and assigned

to a particular person so that discounts for students, senior
citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) can be applied
automatically at the time the fare is collected

• No need to fiddle around with a purse or wallet to pull out bills

or coins; passengers will feel less vulnerable to thieves.

• With adoption of AFC, revenues are expected to increase due

to the reduction of “leakages”.
CONS OF THE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

• Easy to lose

• Prone to damages

• Expensive

• Low quality of internet accessibility on other areas

(for using web based ticket reservation)

• Not too many people has access to electronic

banking
